A family of fixed and reconfigurable optical interconnectionnetworks offering the potential of terabit throughput are described. The designs are based on a bus architecture that combines space, wavelength and other multiplexing methods and has the following attractive features:- graceful growth;wide-sense non-blocking operation;low space switch crosspoint count;and simple control algorithm.

opticalnetworks for both telecommunications and computer applications have been described which use wavelength to route signals. These networks are transparent in that they do not, for example, impose any modulation format, bit rate, framing or coding on the signals carried by the network. Indeed the networks may carry dissimilar signals, the only requirement being that the terminal electronics at the transmitter and receiver are compatible. Experimental results on network range and the use of both semiconductor and fibre based optical amplifiers to extend both the range and splitting capability are presented. Finally the use of active optical devices, for example amplifiers, to provide network switching functions are discussed.

The aim of this work is to find a system which benefits from the inclusion of optical interconnects, and to evaluate the performance advantages. Our conclusion is that a connection network fits the bill very well indeed. It has been shown that by applying various mapping transformations to standard multistage interconnectionnetworks new schemes are obtained which are ideal for the incorporation of optical interconnects. The new two dimensional interconnectionnetworks use light to transport data only over distances so large that electrical communication would slow the system down, and leave electronics to do the rest of the work.

Coherent recombination by matched filtering of a series of pulses derived from a single laser pulse, using optical ladder networks is shown to result in a highly single-peaked correlation function. When this coherent correlation is generated using a low coherence source, the technique may be used in a local area network based on a star topology. This provides a more practical but equally powerful alternative to other current proposals.

The coupling of light into arrays of fibres can be addressed in a number of different ways. Computer or optically generated diffractive lenses and refractive lenses are possible means of generating these structures. This paper will discuss the performance of arrays of lenses formed by melting photoresist. A set of experimental measurements on the coupling efficiencies obtainable using refractive microlenses have been obtained.

This paper examines the basic characteristics of three different types of optical network in the context of important communications bottlenecks that may arise as the processing power of computers increases. The paper is more concerned with estimates of the ultimate performance of archetypal networks and computer architectures than with the present performance of systems and components. In this paper, we are concerned with the subset of optically connected parallel machines (OCPMs) which aspire to be general purpose computers (as opposed to special purpose machines such as image processors), and where the individual processors are relatively powerful. These are multiple-instruction, multiple-data machines.

Photoresist is used to generate surface profiles with a rectangular cross section. However, by using alternative processing techniques, it is also possible to generate a range of continuous profiles within the limits imposed by the thickness of the resist. This has been used in the manufacture of spectroscopic diffraction gratings and certain display holograms. In the present paper we shall consider extending the techniques to the manufacture of some of the components required by developments in electro-optics and optical data handling. In particular, we shall consider microlens arrays and fan-out gratings.
