image reconstruction by computer tomography provides a nonintrusive method of imaging the internal structure of objects. From measurements of radiation (e.g. X-rays or gamma rays) passed through an object, it is possible to reconstruct the internal structure. There is great interest in the potential of such methods in industrial applications but a number of problems need to be solved before these opportunities can be realised. The reconstruction process is computationally intensive and requires imaginative parallelprocessing algorithms to attain ‘real-time’performance. The work carried out has involved evaluating how these algorithms can be used in multiprocessor concurrent architectures to obtain rapid image reconstruction. A suitable computer architecture has been simulated in occam. This allows execution on a collection of transputers.

The Euclidean distance transform (EDT) is an important tool in image analysis. Previous work on computation of EDT is limited to sequential algorithms and parallel algorithms on general purpose architectures. The authors develop a fast parallel algorithm that is amenable for VLSI implementation. The VLSI architecture is presented. Results of implementation of the VLSI design in a commercial package are also presented, and confirm the speed and suitability of the new method for real-time applications.

The ASP System Testbed for Research and applications (ASTRA) is an associative processor-based parallelprocessing system developed for imageprocessingapplications. The machine implements a multilayer heterogeneous architecture with an extendable linear array of simple associative processing elements at its base and more powerful processors at higher levels. A model has been developed to assist in performance evaluation studies of the system on imageprocessingapplications with the aid of vision-related benchmarks. The machine and an analysis of some of the results obtained on one such benchmark are discussed in this paper.

OSP inherently offers parallelism in the processing of data at speeds much higher than those achievable using electrical digital signal processing (DSP). This paper present a practical solution to the problem of real-time robot control including the non-linear dynamic model of the manipulator by employing a parallelprocessing approach. The parallelism inherent in the adaptive controllers is exploited to obtain an efficient implementation that reduces the overall computation time to within the limit acceptable for real time control. The distributed algorithm is implemented on a network of transputers for the six-joint PUMA 560 arm.
