With the advent of parallelprocessing redundancy, in the form of multiple microprocessors is automatically available. There is now much interest in trying to exploit this redundancy for fault tolerance while at the same time utilising the increased processing power. In such systems dynamic reconfiguration and graceful degradation can be employed presenting many interesting challenges to system developers. In the article the experiences of developing these systems using transputers for safety-critical real-time control systems is discussed. Although the work highlights aircraft applications many of the ideas proposed can be translated to other application areas.< >

Presents a novel architecture for the efficient execution of symbolic languages on conventional von Neumann, register-based machines. Unlike other symbolic processingarchitectures, this is based on a Tag Coprocessor (TC) which is designed to work in parallel with a conventional RISC CPU such as the MIPS R3000. The TC performs almost all the tag manipulation operations independently of the CPU. It can also perform stack height checking, range checking and loop control. Our design significantly enhances the execution speed of symbolic languages such as Lisp and Prolog on a RISC processor, yet all existing software for the CPU without the TC will work with minimal modification. The simplicity of the TC architecture provides a cost-effective way of designing systems specifically for artificial intelligence applications.< >

This paper describes research into the specification, design and implementation of real-time synchronisation and control software for a transputer-controlled, modular, multi-axis, independently driven, high-speed, packaging machine under normal and abnormal conditions. The research has already demonstrated the feasibility of using independent drives and software-based controllers for the synchronisation of both intermittent and continuous motions in applications at the boundary of existing technology.

The functions of a robot controller can consist of planning, organisation, coordination and decision making at the top of control hierarchy and, joint angle control at the bottom end. Partition of the computational tasks between various independent processors, which can operate in parallel and communicate with each other when necessary, can help alleviate the burden and allow real-time implementation of a desired control algorithm. For control problem decomposition, although some parts of the algorithm can be considered to be efficiently mapped to a standard parallel architecture, a better performance can be achieved, by exploiting the inherent parallelism of the algorithm first and then devising a suitable processor topology, which matches the number of processes and has identical communication structures, in relation to the developed parallel algorithm. The transputer, being general purpose, capable of high speed processing with extensive capabilities is a relatively low cost processor which suitably fulfills the robot control computational requirements.

Alliant FX/Series systems offer architecture which is particularly well suited for real time simulation and control applications. Examples of applications which have been developed on the system include the Boeing Commercial Future Airplane simulator, NCAR Doppler Radar system for detecting wind shear and the Hughes Aircraft F/A-18 Weapons Training System. Mazda have recently completed a full vehicle simulator for the new Miata Model in which the vehicle dynamics, out of the window views and instruments are all controlled by a central Alliant system.
