Results obtained using the above simulation techniques have been very successful in describing the initial stages of plasma development. Further work is needed to improve the accuracy and stability of the integration techniques and Yousfi (1994), for example, has recently described how to apply finite element methods to the solution of the continuity equations. Although only applied to the one-dimensional case the authors point out that the technique is capable of being extended to higher dimensions. In the later stages of the growth other, for example thermal, processes become increasingly important and these additional effects should be incorporated into the models. In addition better account must be taken of the influence of the external circuit parameters. Hybrid techniques combining Monte-Carlo and fluid models show a great deal of promise although they make great demands on computer time. Even with the enormous increase in computing power that has become available during the last few years, a purely Lagrangian Monte-Carlo calculation is still not feasible but the development of multi-processor systems may change the situation in the fairly near future.< >

mascot is a software development method which was originated with clear recognition of the real-life problems of large-scale software creation. It has for the most part attempted to address the problems through pragmatic means by defining a systematic representation of modularity and abstraction, and providing a virtual machine that supports these concepts during development and at run-time. Although not covering the entire development lifecycle, mascot does provide a framework for what one might term an 'industrial' production of software. To summarise mascot from the management perspective, mascot enables a disciplined approach to large-scale software development to be adopted through its reduction of complexity and ability to make the development process and products more visible and controllable. This enables a manager to husband resources to best effect. The internal quality of any mascot design, if the rules are followed, should also result in lower maintenance costs and prolong the life of the system. The use of mascot for military projects is focused upon.< >

With the advent of the new generation of DSP (Digital Signal Processing) technology more sophisticated methods for speckle reduction, such as the phase acknowledging techniques, are now feasible on a real time basis. There are a number of advantageous features associated with these methods: correction processing is localised; overall image resolution is retained; performance is robust to noise; no specific statistical distribution is assumed; and all algorithmic parameters can be calculated from the A-line data (no subjective indices are required). Hence phase acknowledging techniques may have a useful role in future medical ultrasound systems.< >

The Battlefield Sensor Simulator (BSS) system, built at RSRE Malvern, provides for the modelling and performance evaluation of new and proposed military sensor systems. Both sensor tasking and sensor mixes may be tested interactively. The BSS system covers a battlefield area of up to 50000 square kilometres and can simulate the movement of up to 100000 targets in real time. The architecture of the BSS consists of a centralised computing facility which models battlefield terrain, culture and scenarios together with a collection of client computers which model battlefield sensors. The authors discuss the object-oriented framework which is constituted by a collection of objects known as the Generic Object Set (GOS). The object-oriented framework is written in the programming language Simogen which is an object based version of C. In Simogen, objects have state variables and procedural responses. An important feature of the BSS system is that it can support concurrent sensor models running on different client computers. In the future this will form a basis from which the data fusion of different sensor systems may be modelled.< >

Describes the use of mascot real time networks in distributed system design. First the basic concepts of real time networks are discussed, followed by an outline of those aspects of the mascot 3 notation which are particularly relevant in the design of multi-processor and distributed systems. Then a novel Data Interaction Architecture (DIA) is introduced which supports the use of network design principles for application in multi-processor configurations where communication is through shared memory. This DIA is extended to include the use of active communication elements for application in wider forms of distribution. Finally some design and implementation issues are addressed.< >

The primary objective of the work presented (a part of the MoD central staff's ST(D) 2004 programme), is to assess the suitability of mating mascot3 with Ada. The aim was to capitalise on the results of several earlier studies by implementing a realistic real-time Ada application of non-trivial size based on a mascot3 CIWS design and, furthermore, demonstrate the distribution of an Ada-based system over heterogeneous processors. For this project, the original CIWS design was split between host and target systems as many real Ada projects are to be distributed. The naval example chosen was thought to be sufficiently general to be able to provide information relevant to many application domains. The test scenario used was derived off-line from facilities developed by ARE. The scenario consists of a missile attack on a group of ships by several aircraft. The CIWS has to supply a labelled plan display, LPD, of the unfolding actions. Targets detected by the CIWS are automatically engaged unless vetoed by the operator. Several simpler subset scenarios were also used which were obtained by filtering the most complex version.< >

Electronic support measures (ESM) equipment is tasked with the functions of detection, characterisation and identification of radar emissions in the electromagnetic environment. This environment may contain radar pulse densities in the region of one million pulses per second. These will consist of true emissions intercepted directly from radars along with numerous spurious and corrupted pulses, such as reflections from the sea surface. Signals incident on the ESM antenna will vary greatly in amplitude, with own ship radars all but swamping emissions from distant low power emitters. In this environment, an ESM processor has a demanding task. Besides meeting the data throughput requirement, the reporting latency must be minimal. The processor must be implemented in a flexible, modular architecture to enable algorithms to be upgraded in the field to meet any changes in the threat environment. In an attempt to overcome these and other problems, the Admiralty Research Establishment (ARE) has been pursuing a research program which aims to apply parallel processing techniques to the ESM signal processing task. Transputer technology offers the potential for designing signal processors which can efficiently utilise the processing power of many CPUs. Two projects, initiated by ARE, are worthy of particular note and serve to illustrate the role that transputers may play in future ESM processing. Both projects involve the porting of ARE research software onto a Meiko computing Surface, which is populated with 69 T800-20 transputers.< >

The Data Orientated Requirements Implementation Scheme (DORIS) is a set of integrated methods for the development of real time, embedded, multi-processor systems. It covers the whole of the development life cycle from requirements elicitation and system definition, through design, and on into implementation in software and digital hardware. It has been specially formulated to promote the highest levels of integrity in digital and software system development. The unifying theme which runs through all aspects of DORIS is dataflow, and it draws on existing data flow methods where possible and appropriate. The principal component methods are: CORE, mascot, and DIA. The author outlines the principal architectural concepts and indicates some of the effects on mascot design.< >
