There exists a need for diagnostic monitoringsystems to ensure safer operation of process plants. Although acquisition of plant knowledge would prove expensive and time-consuming, using traditional techniques, this could be significantly reduced by extracting information directly from the data held in the computer Aided Design models used in plant design. The link between the design model and the knowledge base is investigated, proving that the technique is feasible and evaluating its worth. A simple demonstration system is constructed to illustrate the automated knowledge acquisition technique, building the plant-specific portion of a frame-based knowledge base from computer Aided Process Design files, for use in a diagnostic fault finding system.

For many years system control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems have been available for process plant, but these systems have tended to be too expensive for use on small and medium sized industrial furnaces such as those employed in the pottery, ceramics and heat treatment industries. The authors describes a kiln and furnace control and monitoring system that is low cost, modular and can be installed in stages determined by budget constraints or process requirements. It is demonstrated that the variation and magnitude of cross-direction (CD) shrinkage during paper manufacture can be monitored using image analysis. To move from this stage to online monitoring and automatic control is clearly a big step but the possibility is there in the long term. The paper concerns a project to investigate where exactly the differential CD shrinkage occurs on the paper machine and which of the machine and raw materials variables affect it. This has not been possible previously because of the difficulty in measuring the property. Paper can be removed from any point on the pilot paper machine while it is running without interrupting the continuity of the web. The samples can be restrained to prevent further dimensional change by using a ring and plate clamping system, which is readily available because it is used for standard handsheets. The method, then, is a very useful and practical monitoring tool with prospects for automatic control.< >

The work described falls naturally into two separate but related parts. In the first part, three digital control algorithms are examined based on (i) PID (ii) modified deadbeat and (iii) a linguistic rule-based approach and their performance in regulating a medium-sized marine diesel engine is assessed. The other aspect of the work describes a first attempt at providing a graphical interface with the operator for the real-time monitoring of engine parameters. The software is created in the form of a monitoring toolbox and illustrates the concepts which could form the basis of any future on-line diesel engine health monitoring facility.< >
