The task of controlling a single-input, single-output plant involves three distinct steps: plant identification, controller design and finally implementation of the closed loop control system. The work to be described was motivated by the realisation that the personalcomputer has a useful role to play in all three aspects. Further, it is likely that this role will increase with the ever expanding hardware and software capabilities of these machines. The object of this paper is to briefly outline our work in this area. In particular the software options, microcomputer requirements and current applications will be described.

This paper is concerned with the verification of the performance of a high speed interprocessor communication network operating in a real time environment. The network forms a key element in a multiprocessor system which will be required to carry out plantcontrol and monitoring operations. A program of testing has been implemented in a power station environment to assess the performance of a particular local area network technology for use real time process control and monitoring applications. The tests were proceeded by approximate theoretical and labatory studies to give baseline performance figures for this environment.

Papers, representing seven aspects of 'resource conservation' were presented at a colloquium arranged by the Management Group M2 (Engineering and Society). Three components were identified in relation to UK's energy policy - a general objective, the prospects for major fuels over the next 20 years, and the need for greater emphasis on the demand side of the energy equation. Sensitivity to price increases will force a degree of conservation. Much energy is consumed in the production of materials, such as reducing ore to metal, and conservation can be achieved both through more efficient conversion processes and by more economical use of materials including recycling. The concept of 'energy management' should be applied to large commercial and industrial sites, concentrating on the components that provide a rapid payback of investment. The procedure is initiated by making an energy audit and by identifying where improvement is possible, either by using less energy, or by recycling it. monitoring and control has developed from the control of single parameters to full building and plant management systems, computercontrolled and embracing security and data gathering. An estimated 40% of electricity is used to power electric motors, and energy costs can greatly exceed capital cost. A systems approach is desirable to arrive at the most cost-effective specification, taking into account both electrical and mechanical efficiencies, and direct and indirect maintenance costs. This requires a team approach to the technical decision making. Once plant has been commissioned, life can be extended by taking appropriate care of it, identifying and monitoring the relevant deterioration mechanisms.

There exists a need for diagnostic monitoringsystems to ensure safer operation of process plants. Although acquisition of plant knowledge would prove expensive and time-consuming, using traditional techniques, this could be significantly reduced by extracting information directly from the data held in the computer Aided Design models used in plant design. The link between the design model and the knowledge base is investigated, proving that the technique is feasible and evaluating its worth. A simple demonstration system is constructed to illustrate the automated knowledge acquisition technique, building the plant-specific portion of a frame-based knowledge base from computer Aided Process Design files, for use in a diagnostic fault finding system.

Describes the processes involved in building a plantwide expert process and fiscal control system to: keep the product in trim and maximise profit. The aim was to keep all the board qualities in trim at all times regardless of the varying wood feedstock quality. A PC based local area network (LAN) was installed to monitor and record the entire process. Fifty eight plant variables, moving mimic diagrams and history graphs were displayed at various operator terminals.< >
