The paper describes on-going work that is currently taking place in adopting non-linear fuzzy models, represented as three dimensional piecewise linear surfaces, for use within non-linear control strategies. Graphical results are presented and comparisons are drawn between the fuzzy modelling approach and that of the more traditional non-linear ARMA model structures.

This paper deals with the integration of Radial Basis Function (RBF) Networks into the industrial software control package Connoisseur. The paper shows the improved modelling capabilities offered by RBF Networks within the Connoisseur environment compared to linear modelling techniques such as Recursive Least Squares. The paper also goes on to mention the way this improved modelling capability, obtained through the RBF networks will be utilised within Connoisseur.

This paper is concerned with multivariable controller synthesis for a multiburner furnace design commonly seen in industry. A nonlinear multivariate controller design method based on sliding mode theory is explained and demonstrated for such furnaces. This framework can be used for temperature and oxygen concentration regulation simultaneously. The disturbance rejection and tracking possibilities of the controller makes it a good candidate for implementation on a real furnace.

A multi-loop control scheme for a state-of-the-art section mill is described. The basis of the system is the set-up calculation which uses complex, non-linear models of the rolling process to predict the optimum settings for the mill stands. To obtain maximum performance from the system, adaptive control loops are included on three levels: piece-by-piece, pass-by-pass and in-pass. These loops use various techniques for identification of piece state and model parameters, including square root information filtering and extended Kalman filtering. The paper describes some of the problems of applying these methods to an online system and shows how these problems are addressed in practice.

Any feedback control scheme implemented on a solar thermal power plant must incorporate an adaptive mechanism to operate effectively. However, on-line estimation based upon high order transfer function models tend to perform poorly with slow parameter convergence being the norm. Additionally, lower order transfer function models tend to yield unreliable performance and inadequate control bandwidths when used on this plant. Pre-scheduling is therefore an attractive preposition for this type of solar power plant where model dynamics can be accurately defined. This paper details the development of pre-scheduled adaptive mechanism based on a physical model of the Acurex solar power plant at the Plataforma Solar de Almeria.

The stone processing industries produce different types of material for use in the construction industries. Two major types are stone aggregates used for production of asphalt and concrete, and polished stone slabs used for a range of products including floor and wall tiles. Traditionally, the stone processing industries have relied on manual and subjective methods of plant set up, monitoring and control. The increasing demand for better quality products and lower costs is creating a trend towards process optimization and automatic control. Due to the non-linear nature of the involved processes, the introduction of automation in these industries is often problematic. Variation in stone properties, in particular, presents a major problem which causes a drift in plant performance in terms of tool wear, system efficiency, and product characteristics. The paper describes the use of adaptive and intelligent control strategies to overcome this problem in both stone polishing and aggregate industries.

Experimental results on a laboratory micromachine illustrate how the presence of a supervisory expert system can enhance the robustness and performance of a self-tuning controller. The system provides bumpless startup of an adaptive controller, eliminating induced transient oscillations while maintaining closed-loop operation. Injection of appropriate PRBS inputs, moving parameter boundaries, etc. maintain stability of the adaptive estimator and the controller output, although instability detection algorithms ensure that if the self-tuner could fail it is switched out. The settings for a PID controller are regularly retuned, so that the back-up controller can successfully replace the self-tuning regulator, thus maintaining stable operation.

The development and evaluation of Generalised Predictive control (GPC) for on-line administration of muscle relaxant drugs in operating theatre is described. The necessary software was transferred into the operating theatre at two sites where successful trials were performed. Excellent regulation has been achieved, and the GPC algorithm displayed good robustness properties against disturbances such as surgical diathermy. The work was extended later to the multivariable case involving simultaneous control of muscle relaxation, and unconsciousness using blood pressure monitoring. While preliminary results are very encouraging, it is hoped to conduct more clinical trials using this system to establish its robustness especially over a wide spectrum of patients whose dynamics vary on a 1:4 ratio.

Motion controllers are an essential component of modern manufacturing machinery. The computer control systems are a key part in designing and building production machines. Due to a lack of solid mechanical parts to automatically link motions, coordination and synchronisation problems among the interactive motions are the one of major barriers which can hamper further advances with the new design philosophy. The tight control and flexible operation of a machine with multi-axes can only be realised if the software controlled drives can be properly coordinated and synchronised. This paper presents the concept and implementation of a scheme that uses a fuzzy logic control approach to realise enhanced drive synchronisation. A new master-slave configuration using fuzzy logic is developed. Imperfect synchronisation can be corrected on-line. The simulation and experimental results show that the fuzzy based 'closed loop synchronisation mechanism' gives enhanced performance when compared to conventional master-slave open loop synchronisation techniques.
