The probability distribution of the various possible tracks of a target is studied using a Bayesian formulation of the tracking problem. The Bayesian approach is used to characterize the pattern of target motion using a probability density function f(Track). The target sensor is characterized by means of a conditional probability f(Sensor data|Track). The approach is illustrated by an example concerned with tracking a target within a geometrical plane using unreliable bearing information from two fixed stations.

The problem of tracking air objects using a Space Based Radar (SBR) constellation is addressed. Each satellite contains an electronically scanned phased array radar that is responsible for its own detection and tracking. The detailed design of an Interacting Multiple Model (IMM) extended Kalman filter is expounded for this application. Five target motion models, all constrained to lie on a spherical shell about the Earth, are employed. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the performance of the tracking algorithms.

The tracking requirements of a passive bistatic radar system operating in the VHF/UHF regions are addressed. The system exploits existing terrestrial domestic broadcast signals, measuring their Doppler shift and direction of arrival (DOA) after reflection off a target, to determine the target's track. Data is collected using a simple two channel receiver system, that down converts the region around the TV vision carrier to baseband, and then samples and digitizes it before storing the data on a 386 PC.

Multiple sensor data fusion has become an essential part of target tracking in recent years. The use of multiple sensors on single or multiple platforms requires fusion of data to provide a true synergistic use of the sensors. Applications include airborne target tracking, ground based sensor netting, fusion of JTIDS data, integrated navigation, and multi-spectral seekers in missiles. A comparison of the relative advantages of track fusion (sensor-level fusion) and measurement fusion (central-level fusion) suggests that although measurement fusion is technically superior, in many scenarios track fusion is more appropriate (e.g. the target tracking algorithms may be optimized to the sensor). This paper considers recent advances in track fusion algorithm design from experience in the development of generic track fusion algorithms for sensors with very different characteristics.

An algorithm for Multiple target tracking in clutter with bounded-noise assumptions is described. Multiple hypothesis is used for data association. When a set of measurements is processed, a validation matrix is formed, all possible measurement-to-target association hypotheses are examined and the weight of each hypothesis is calculated. These hypotheses and weights are stored in the hypothesis matrix and hypotheses pruning is applied. Measurement- and target-oriented versions of data association follow from the approach for constructing a validation matrix. Compared to Kalman filtering, specification of a prior gating threshold is not required and the algorithm can work with any noise distribution as long as the specified bounds are not optimistic.

A number of techniques which use a dynamic programming (DP) search method to detect target tracks were compared. The performance of the two techniques, the graph theoretic (GT) tracker and a hidden Markov model (HMM) tracker, were simulated. The HMM system was capable of significantly better performance than the GT system, but only if the assumed model parameters matched the presented data. The GT tracker was more likely to produce outliers or spurious track elements since it is not limited to the detection of a single track, unlike the HMM which inevitably only produces one track with possible gaps.

The additional degree of freedom of phased array radar of varying the update time offers the possibility of tracking the target using a variable update time according to the tracking condition at that moment. Different approaches to the problem of tracking a target in cluttered environments have been considered using constant update times. The Probabilistic Data Association Filter (PDAF) is one of these approaches. In this paper a probabilistic data association filter that uses adaptive update times, for tracking a target in a cluttered environment is presented and compared with the PDAF that uses a constant update time. The tracking performance of the algorithm is assessed by Monte Carlo simulation on different target trajectories. A comparison is made using the following performance figures: the percentage of tracks lost, the mean update time and mean number of updates.

For the problem of tracking multiple targets the Joint Probabilistic Data Association (JPDA) filter has shown to be very effective in handling clutter and missed detections. The JPDA, however, also tends to coalesce neighbouring tracks. Through comparing JPDA with the Exact Nearest Neighhour PDA (ENNPDA) filter, Fitzgerald has shown that hypotheses pruning is an effective way to prevent track coalescence. The dramatic pruning used for ENNPDA however leads to an undesired sensitivity to clutter and missed detections. In this paper a new algorithm combines the advantages of JPDA and ENNPDA.
