The semi-formalised nature of the legal domain has encouraged work form academic lawyers and others in the development of legal knowledge-based systems. Recently, Ashley proposed the importance of building systems that assist lawyers in finding source material with which they may answer their own problems. Legal database system should make information available tailored to the particular context of the user's problem, and in doing so, would use the same relevance criteria as human experts. In CA-Clipper, two system have been developed to fulfill Ashley's criteria. The first system is called CAMLAW, and the second is ICARUS.

By nature, the Construction industry is fragmented. Previously, researchers have used IT for providing numerous decision support systems for the professionals involved in the industry. However, this approach have its limitations. Integration must be achieved at a fairly early stage of design as 80% of cost effective design decisions are made during the early design stage. The purpose of this article is to describe an approach for integration, that surpasses the performance of the previous approaches.

Two components of the KATE-toolbox for reasoning with cases are presented: KATE induction that generates decision trees and/or decision rules from cases, and KATE-CBR that supports case-basedreasoning activity. KATE-induction automatically builds a decision tree from a database of training cases. KATE-CBR is a module that performs CBR and is able to index dynamically the cases during the problem stage, bypassing general knowledge problems such as rules or decision trees. In this effort to integrate induction and CBR, four levels of integration are defined to come up with architectures that bring maximum benefit for the client. This integration has consolidated the maintenance experiences that comes from different maintenance teams located at different sites in a real scale environment.

A knowledge-intensive case-basedreasoning system (KICS) under development in the domain of statutory building regulations is described using case histories from The Scottish Office's Building Directorate. A key aspect of reasoning in this domain is that much of the interpretation of the regulations is not stated directly in the regulatory documents but is derived from experience in applying them to particular cases.

case-basedreasoning (CBR) has a great potential in engineering design. A project aiming to realize this potential by applying CBR in bridge design is presented. The industrial collaboration has already identified suitable storage and matching criteria. Different retrieval techniques and indexing criteria are being investigated. By combining this research with the industrial collaborators' experience in bridge design, it is expected that a useful bridge design CBR system can be developed.

case-basedreasoning (CBR) provides an effective way of overcoming problems in the diagnosis of building defects using expert systems. Although not completely easy, a non-computer programmer can successfully develop a CBR system. CBR system can explain results by linking additional information to a case. In this work, explanation is often cited as an advantage of model-basedreasoning (MBR) systems and a limitation of CBR. The CBR paradigm is contrasted to that of MBR, and characteristics that make a problem domain suitable for CBR are described. The implementation of a CBR system highlighting the good and bad features of the software used is also described.

This paper describes a project using a case-basedreasoning system for troubleshooting purposes. The problem domain is the production equipment of a battery separator manufacturing site. The aim of the project is to assist the users to diagnose faults thereby reducing down time. case-basedreasoning (CBR) is a new approach using knowledge from past experiences to solve or evaluate new problems. CBR suggests actions to take or makes recommendations by comparing (matching) the current situation with similar previous situations. The paper outlines the development of a CBR Express system at Cookson Entek Limited It explains the problem domain and the type of data acquired. The paper gives some details about the benefits and limitations of this technology. Suggestions are made for further improvements to the software which would increase the performance of the case-base. The paper concludes with an outlook for future work at Cookson Entek.
