There are specific requirements for closely coupled controlnetworks which are not met by currently standardized architectures. The network architectures which have been standardized so far were primarily intended for general traffic and are not always capable of providing adequate performance and resilience for time-critical applications. The TCCA (time critical communication aspects) task group was set up in ISO TC 184/SC5/WG2 to identify user requirements for time-critical communication systems and quality of service.

We describe how the formal method Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) has been applied in the specification of the communication aspects of a safety-critical Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. We outline the requirements of such a system, and then illustrate how a theory of safety, based on the CSP notion of determinism, has been used to reason about safety properties of such a system.

HIFLIRTS (High Integrity Data communications For Light Rail Transport Systems) is a collaborative project led by ERA Technology Ltd. The project aims to advance UK's capability in the field of data communications for light rail transport applications. The on train passenger help point will provide emergency audio communication between passengers and the driver and control room, plus the ability to observe the carriage interiors from the driver's cab and the control room. To achieve this goal, compressed digital audio and video will be transmitted over networks which will be installed in future train systems.

Microscopic simulation has been a desire of traffic modellers and transportation planners for many years, since it is only by considering individual vehicles that congestion effects, variable driver behaviour effects, and accurate pollution emissions can be simulated. PARAMICS is presented as a tool for microscopic traffic simulation for congestion management. PARAMICS consists of a suite of software tools for the simulation of traffic conditions at the individual vehicle level. The current PARAMICS software accepts standard traffic modelling data formats, and includes a large number of transport planning and environmental features.

The Highways Agency of the Department of Transport is implementing a pilot of a `controlled motorway' on the M25. The concept behind the pilot is that by controlling the traffic, the onset of flow breakdown can be delayed or prevented. The key to this scheme is the control strategy which determines at what times and under what traffic conditions, speed control will be introduced. The initial operation of the scheme will be based upon a simple flow algorithm, but it is anticipated that the full benefits of controlled operation will only be achieved with more sophisticated control strategies. The SIST computer simulation model is being used to assess alternative control strategies to determine which should be implemented on the M25.

This paper is about some of the problems seen with the integration of signaling for support of Integrated Services Internet over Broadband ISDN. in it we contrast the mechanisms employed by the Internet resource reservation protocol, RSVP with those of B-ISDN and Q.2931. We do not propose any solution, but try to give an indication of the direction that signaling for broadband networks must evolve to support more effectively the higher level services that most users will be employing.
