The computer-based learning material being developed by the System and High Level Design theme of the electronic Design education Consortium project aims to replicate the standard learning environment while reducing the demands on demonstrator. To support the expression of abstract designs, the material is based around the use of VHDL and VHDL tools. The particular environment being developed aims to give students access to the standard VHDL tools that they would normally use, supplemented by some automated analysis of their design.

The teaching of digital systems design has traditionally been done through lectures, laboratory design exercises and projects. The introduction of interactive computer software presents an opportunity to present the students with new incentives for learning digital electronics by enabling them to relate design requirements to pertinent underlying theory. The result of a work into the production of computer-based learning materials that will address top down digital design is presented.

The underpinning of much of the understanding of electrical signals and systems relies on a proper foundation in some relatively simple concepts. How computer-based learning materials can be used to support and teach these concepts, thereby enhancing the students understanding of materials which has traditionally relied almost entirely on mathematics for its comprehension, is illustrated.

Training is considered an important element in learning engineering courses. For the training to be effective, there must be an active student participation. To achieve this, the group size should be small in order to be able to give adequate feedback to the student and to provide each student with exercises matching his level of mastery. The usually limited human resources, however, prohibit giving training to small groups. An adaptive computer-based training program for electronics engineering education, which can provide a solution for this dilemma, is described.

The electronic Design education Consortium (EDEC) is dedicated to the production of computer-based teaching and learning material to support the education of electronic engineers and computer scientists. Eight universities are collaborating in the production of the courseware which has been grouped into four major theme areas, namely, electronic Circuit Design, Digital Design, System and High Level Design and Testing and Design for Test. The Institution of Electrical Engineers is also a member of the Consortium. Over the three year duration of the project it is hoped to develop 160 hours of courseware which will be, where ever possible, closely integrated with the industry-standard electronic CAD software available under the ECAD and EUROCHIP initiatives.

The use of standard designs or templates can help to reduce the development time for computer-based lessons. A design for interactive simulations, which can be incorporated into lesson designs, has been developed. This design is particularly useful when the package is being used to teach topics where one or more graphs are needed to be drawn interactively. The design have been used to create simulations in lessons on a variety of subjects and provides learners with limited variation experiments with a consistent user interface illustrating the theoretical topics in a lesson.

Information on a software package developed for use by students in a first course in control systems are presented. The flexibility provided by the package is found satisfactory for many industrial applications. Many users of control engineering software are not using the software continuously and therefore any approaches which make the software easier to use are particularly useful. Additional packages are developed to study such topics as simple aspects of nonlinear control, model reduction and PID controller design.

An opportunity was taken, as part of a third year module on design for manufacture, to expose students to the need to take account of the tolerances associated with the `real' components they would have to use in circuits. This paper outlines the task set and the support found to be necessary for the use of PSPICE as a means of performing tolerance analysis on a realistic circuit. It also incorporates some student and lecturer experiences relating to that work. It concludes that the approach increases awareness among students of the effect of component tolerances on circuit yield with circuits of some complexity, but that the exercise requires improvements to the support given in the early stages of using the PSPICE tools if learning time is to be reduced.
