Vehicle electronic systems are subject to a series of vibration environments, manufacture, shipment and operation. The first of these does not cause any problems but should not be ignored, the second is normally controlled by suitable protective packaging, such as a plastic foam. When the protective packaging is removed, the system lives in the operating environment and is subjected to three primary disturbances: sinusoidal vibration, random vibration, and mechanical shock. The different considerations in the vibration design and testing of vehicle electronic systems are discussed.

Model-based Object Oriented systems Engineering (MOOSE) is a full lifecycle computer systems engineering method intended for the development of products that make use of application specific embedded and distributed computer systems. This paper is concerned with multivariable controller synthesis for a multiburner furnace design commonly seen in industry. A nonlinear multivariate controller design method based on sliding mode theory is explained and demonstrated for such furnaces. This framework can be used for temperature and oxygen concentration regulation simultaneously. The disturbance rejection and tracking possibilities of the controller makes it a good candidate for implementation on a real furnace.

The concepts of place invariants and structural conflicts are applied to the design of Petri net controllers. The use of structural conflicts simplifies the synthesis procedure when dealing with forbidden states involving firing vectors, and the resulting controller is simpler compared with those obtained based on place invariants alone. Moreover, the method can be applied to any Petri net without the restriction of safety, which significantly extends the application domain.

The work reported here is concerned with research carried out at the University of Birmingham, UK and funded by London Underground Limited (LUL) into early-failure warning systems for safety-critical railway signalling equipment. The paper outlines the motivation for the research, a brief overview of the requirements for condition monitoring systems, a summary of various condition monitoring and fault diagnosis used in the study. The process of laboratory tests and field trials which led to the development of ideas and techniques for the employment of intelligent neural network-based sensors for on-line condition monitoring of railway equipment are briefly reported. This work is carried out with the aim of developing a digital data transfer technique between a PC and PLC to provide for the development and testing of multi-actuator fluid power simulation models. Several methods of encoding/decoding techniques have been developed and tested using simulation modeling. At relatively low cost, substantial improvements in the development and testing of PLC control and monitoring software have been achieved which extend to the simulation of authentic industrial fluid power systems.

The convergence of techniques from the fields of mechatronics, image sensing and display, virtual reality, and broadband telecommunications has helped in the development of telepresence (TP) systems. These systems involve the combination of both real and virtual worlds to provide useful information for a variety of applications. For full telepresence, the user must have the illusion that all of their senses have been projected into the remote location. A minimum telepresence experience would therefore consist of three dimensional color vision from sensors slaved to the users head.

A continuous passive motion (CPM) machine has been developed for the therapeutic treatment of finger disorders. The machine operates under position feedback control using Visual Basic software operating on a laptop computer. Tests on patients have demonstrated the reliability and versatility of the machine when operating under bench top conditions but there have been marked problems associated with the machine-to-patient interface. Two linkages were designed to behave as kinematic chains which can be used in either a passive mode or an active mode. The paper provides a description of the linkages, the use of Visual Basic software to provide immediate display of data and the methods for data capture.

The development of a driver interface for autonomous intelligent cruise control (AICC) was among the areas studied by the PROMETHEUS research program. Two interface configurations were implemented and tested: one uses six steering wheel switches with flexible format display and the other has three steering wheel switches for driver controls, increment set speed, decrement set speed and cruise/cancel. The driver interface for cruise control was not found to be the most appropriate model on which to base an interface for AICC. AICC systems should be designed in such a way that it reflects the way drivers will use the system and the way drivers actually control their vehicles.
