Simulations of fuzzy logic and neural network based control algorithms show some useful insights into the potential of soft computing in the control regime of electrical motor servos and drives. Results show that soft computing offers robustness to a conventional PI controller, and can overcome positional steady state error due to the system's nonlinearities. Design procedures are more straightforward as stringent mathematical models and analysis are usually not involved. Formulation of membership functions and tuning the boundaries of these functions are, however, time-consuming, and solutions may not be guaranteed.

Design features for visual, audio and tactile interfaces for vehicle controlsystems are evaluated. Many useful ideas for tactile design can be derived from existing switch configurations. Providing tactile feedback could help solve the problem of too much information being on display and the driver taking his eyes off the road for too long. Audio feedback complements the tactile feedback from switches and also helps the driver to keep his eyes on the road. It is essential for Intelligent Cruise control that information should only be displayed visually if there is no reasonable alternative.

Many high-performance embedded real-time systems are today implemented heterogeneously, with some parts of the functionality in hardware and others in software. In this paper, we discuss how hardware/software codesign techniques can be used to improve the design of such systems, and we focus on hardware/software partitioning and its relation to other important design activities, such as system behavioural description and hardware architecture selection.

Engineers and scientists working in mobile computing often have to justify or even defend their efforts when dealing with people from industry. The developer's enthusiasm is regularly challenged by responses of the form 'Yes, but who is actually going to use it'. This talk attempts to move from technically justifying work in mobile computing to commercially motivating it. Collaborative mobile applications have a role to play in the utility environment and this role is set to expand as competition develops.

The development of a driver interface for autonomous intelligent cruise control (AICC) was among the areas studied by the PROMETHEUS research program. Two interface configurations were implemented and tested: one uses six steering wheel switches with flexible format display and the other has three steering wheel switches for driver controls, increment set speed, decrement set speed and cruise/cancel. The driver interface for cruise control was not found to be the most appropriate model on which to base an interface for AICC. AICC systems should be designed in such a way that it reflects the way drivers will use the system and the way drivers actually control their vehicles.

Traveller and driver information systems are usually applied on motorway and high capacity truck road networks, providing information on accidents, queues and congestion levels and recommending diversion routes where appropriate. Using Edinburgh as a case study, this paper describes how traveller information and controlsystems can be designed as part of an integrated approach to reducing traffic congestion in urban areas. The Edinburgh system illustrates how traveller information and controlsystems can be applied in an integrated manner within a complex urban environment to tackle the problem of traffic congestion.

The construction of computer-based cognitive artefacts is a central theme in the Empirical Modelling Project that is being carried out at the University of Warwick. In this project, the principles for constructing such artefacts were developed. These principles and their implications are described and illustrated informally with reference to familiar artefacts for telling the time.

Increasing levels of congestion in many towns and cities affect bus operations and passenger as well as motorists. For this situation to be contained and reversed, full use has to be made of bus priority systems to protect buses from congestion, and attract new passengers from private transport. This paper provides an overview of the development and application of current traffic signal control techniques used in the UK to provide priority for buses in congested situations. The focus is on the Urban Traffic controlsystems TRANSYT and SCOOT, which are the predominant form of signal control in the UK towns and cities.

The geometric bounding toolbox is a set of routines in MATLABTM to perform operations on polytopes, polyhedra and ellipsoids. The package has the efficiency and ease of use of its routines that seems to make these complex operations simple. The paper is an overview of the use of MATLAB toolbox GBT for system identification and control.
