In this paper the method of validation or verifying designs is discussed, and tools are presented that can be used to provide a framework for verifying codesigned systems. Inferential estimation involves the determination of difficult to measure process variables from easily accessible secondary information. In addition to the capital costs of instrumentation, the downward pressure on manpower costs and overheads involved in maintenance make soft sensing attractive for industrial applications. Viscosity control in a polymerization reactor is addressed. The neural network based inferential estimation, where the network is trained to predict the polymer viscosity from past torque and viscosity data, is investigated. Results from the offline training of a feedforward network are presented and new work on online viscosity estimation using B-Spline networks is described.

A first generation mechatronic system is described in this report. The major aim of this system is to place and solder advanced electronics packages that require exacting levels of positional accuracy, onto carriers whose relative dimensional stability is subject to high statistical variation, due to prior manufacturing processing. The system operates within a high volume manufacturing facility and so high levels of repeatability and availability are essential.

The impact of the resulting increase in information regarding driver performance must be carefully monitored in order to ensure that the influx of integrated driver support systems will be beneficial in terms of traffic safety and driving performance. The continued and increasing usage of the generic evaluation method (GEM) by the automotive industry will result in the improved design of driver support system interfaces and should provide a basis for further standardization and validation of evaluation methods. A database of reference values and comparable evaluation results will permit confidentiality of design details which should encourage cooperation among researchers and the automotive industry.

The need for new handling systems has been widely recognised, with manufacturers demanding ever higher output over shorter periods of time. This scenario is very evident in the snack food industry, where competition is becoming increasingly fierce. In view of this, a new handling system has been developed. The new system is capable of receiving randomly aligned flexibly packaged objects and aligning them to within 2 degrees of angular error and 4 millimeters of lateral position error.
