An incremental approach for generating multiple fault explanations when the system behavior model is incomplete or contains temporal dependencies has been developed using a cost bounded Assumption-based Truth Maintenance System (ATMS) as an underlying implementation mechanism. A multi-loop control scheme for a state-of-the-art section mill is described. The basis of the system is the set-up calculation which uses complex, non-linear models of the rolling process to predict the optimum settings for the mill stands. To obtain maximum performance from the system, adaptive control loops are included on three levels: piece-by-piece, pass-by-pass and in-pass. These loops use various techniques for identification of piece state and model parameters, including square root information filtering and extended Kalman filtering. The paper describes some of the problems of applying these methods to an online system and shows how these problems are addressed in practice.

Any feedback control scheme implemented on a solar thermal power plant must incorporate an adaptive mechanism to operate effectively. However, on-line estimation based upon high order transfer function models tend to perform poorly with slow parameter convergence being the norm. Additionally, lower order transfer function models tend to yield unreliable performance and inadequate control bandwidths when used on this plant. Pre-scheduling is therefore an attractive preposition for this type of solar power plant where model dynamics can be accurately defined. This paper details the development of pre-scheduled adaptive mechanism based on a physical model of the Acurex solar power plant at the Plataforma Solar de Almeria.

This discussion covers the basic Plant-controller systems. Using several examples of behavior of quite simple mobile robots, it is shown how the sense-model-reason-plan-act architecture of the Classical mobile robot is derived from the Plant-controller system concept. Following this, it is illustrated how the same kind of behavior can be produced by a mobile robot which uses a quite different kind of architecture. Finally, it is suggested that an extension of this type of architecture can and does form the basis for a different kind of mobile robot.

An outline is presented of the concept of how the performance requirements of multimedia applications can be matched to the varying levels of performance offered by a real mobile communication network. The concept of specifying the quality of service required by an application allows more efficient sharing of the network with other users. By measuring the actual quality of service, comparison is carried out against that expected and in the event of a deficit, the application requirement is modified. This notion of adaptively controlling the quality of service means that more work related tasks can be performed on the same number of channels.

System development is an iterative process encompassing the many decisions which need to be made in order to reach the design of the `final product.' One way to ensure that the requirements of the user population are eventually met in the final product is to work with the users throughout the life cycle. Conversely, the highest risk approach occurs when a commodity is produced based on a design which has had no input from the intended users. The benefits of user participation are greatest at the start of the design process decreasing as the product moves through the various life cycle stages.

A real time expert system has been installed at the Bloom and Billet Mill at the British Steel Sections, Plates and Commercial Steels Scunthorpe Works designed to allow engineers to add and modify rules through a generic graphical rule editor. The expert system covers the soaking pits and the gas mixing station. It currently diagnoses operational problems with the soaking pits and generates messages which are displayed to the process operator via an existing message screen.
