Inductive learning techniques offer the potential for learning to classify whether a given situation is `safe' or `unsafe' based on past incident data. The most common learning algorithms are developments of ID3, CART or AQ. The problems of using such algorithms for learning whether a situation is `safe' or `unsafe' are examined. It is shown that the primary problem with the use of these algorithms in the area of safety remains the manner in which numerical attributes are discretized.

Verification of real-time systems is a complex exercise given the limitations of the tools and techniques currently available. This paper identifies the issues associated with real-time systems, refers to a process model developed to bolster its arguments, and provides a critique as to whether the current verification approaches do adequately address the behavioral issues in real-time software and hardware. Current research in real-time Domain Models and Reference Architectures is also discussed, as well as the authors' initial impressions on the Stanford University's RAPIDE language and its toolset.

A computer based simulation technique has been developed to aid the procurement and testing of programmable logic controllers (PLC) and condition monitoring software for electro-pneumatic and electro-hydraulic systems working in an industrial manufacturing environment. Condition monitoring, using measurable parameters such as pressure, flow rate and fluid quality, can provide a useful indication of the current running condition of such systems and a warning of possible mechanical failure. At relatively low cost, substantial improvements in the testing and development capability has been obtained.

A 'hybrid system' is evaluated using the principal component analysis (PCA) mathematical model, and the results obtained will be applied to a CBR system incorporating CART, ID3, C4.5, and their respective derivatives. The first two steps of PCA are applied to Remind, a CBR tool that incorporates CART as an underlying algorithm in its 'Inductive Retrieval Engine.' A modular reconfigurable PC-Windows based software for the installation of University of Nottingham's flexible manufacturing cell is developed. This software enables a cell consisting of any relevant Denford equipment to be installed quickly and effectively. Also, the software is sufficiently general that it could be used to control and simulate cells consisting of other equipment and so new wider market is potentially available for systems, e.g. industrial cells which are non-competitive with Denfords. This paper outlines the development of the system and discusses the facilities available and how these may be combined to move towards an integrated system. Specifically, an indication of the particular needs of educational establishments is provided.

Access to information in electronic forms is currently difficult for blind people, but electronic information forms also provide great potential to overcome the difficulties that blind people have in accessing information in general. The ACCESS Project is developing tools which will provide interfaces to computer-based systems which will be adaptable to the needs of different user groups. One demonstrator within the ACCESS Project is developing an access system for hypermedia systems for blind people, particularly blind students. This paper presents findings from the initial user requirements studies for this access system and discusses the initial design.
