RAC is one of the United Kingdom's leading motoring organizations whose members can call for help in case of a breakdown. All 1380 RAC Service Patrols have been issued with a handheld electronic workshop manual containing the equivalent of 160,000 pages of searchable technical information, as well as all aspects of vehicle repair. The idea of an electronic databook was in response to the feeling that, with all Patrol staff working from home, a better way was needed to distribute and update technical information than posting hard-copy manual updates. Other benefits, like increased patrol confidence and faster repair times, are presented.

Knowledge discovery in databases is the process of applying statistical, machine learning and other techniques to conventional database systems. A brief description of temporal database systems and some examples to show how the ORES Temporal Database Management System (TDBMS), an ESPRIT project, can provide the necessary functionality to infer accurate and valuable knowledge from temporal databases are presented. In particular, three common classes of database mining problems involving classifications, associations and sequences are discussed. Data mining as a technique to increase the quality of data, temporal databases as a technique to keep the history of data and their integration as a means to even higher quality data are also discussed.

Handy 1 has been developed as a robotic aid to independence for the severely disabled. Originally, Handy 1 was designed to meet the needs of a 12 year old boy with cerebral palsy who wanted independence during mealtimes. The first prototype was based on a Cyber 310 robot with five degrees of freedom plus gripper and a press sensitive pad as the human machine interface. Several modifications have been made of the original design to accommodate the special needs of people with varying degrees of disabilities.

The stone processing industries produce different types of material for use in the construction industries. Two major types are stone aggregates used for production of asphalt and concrete, and polished stone slabs used for a range of products including floor and wall tiles. Traditionally, the stone processing industries have relied on manual and subjective methods of plant set up, monitoring and control. The increasing demand for better quality products and lower costs is creating a trend towards process optimization and automatic control. Due to the non-linear nature of the involved processes, the introduction of automation in these industries is often problematic. Variation in stone properties, in particular, presents a major problem which causes a drift in plant performance in terms of tool wear, system efficiency, and product characteristics. The paper describes the use of adaptive and intelligent control strategies to overcome this problem in both stone polishing and aggregate industries.

Hardware/software codesign is an approach to system design which allows hardware and software design aspects of a system to be considered concurrently. The decision to allocate functionality to hardware or software can then be made in such a way that it may have benefits in terms of improved overall systems performance, improved reliability and lower cost. In the case of fingerprint recognition systems, exploring the cost and performance trade-offs between different implementations is the critical leading factor for their use in commercial/industrial environments. The hardware/software trade-offs possible in designing a fingerprint recognition system are examined.

Caledonian Paper in Scotland, open since 1989, is one of the largest and most modern paper mills in Scotland. Recently, the mill wanted a way to capture the diagnosis and troubleshooting expertise from the most experienced craftsmen and make this available 24 hours a day throughout the plant. Since a standard rule based approach would not be appropriate to assist with the variable speed drives, a case based reasoning diagnosis system was developed using the ReMind software. Currently, the system is undergoing trials to determine its efficiency.

The 'knowledge-based assistant' (KBA) software developed using a knowledge-based system (KBS) and adcmail helps a lecturer in the administration of an undergraduate course. This approach is successful in its objective of reducing the number of messages presented to the lecturer. However, it often achieves this by increasing the number of messages other members of the organisation receive. To overcome this failure, a system of cooperating knowledge-based systems (CKBS) which reduces the overall number of messages for the organisation has been developed. This cooperation is implemented using the Knowledge Query and Manipulation Language (KQML) that provides a protocol for KBS' to share and exchange knowledge.

The National Motorway Communications System Mark 2 (NMCS2) was developed to improve the efficiency of existing English road networks. NMCS2 is made up of local and wide area communication networks and operator interfaces. The instation provides the basic housekeeping facilities such as regular polling of outstations, operation and fault reporting, and system performance statistics. These instations are connected with each other by means of a wide area Regional Communications controller (RCC) network which employs X25 protocols.

Wayland is an industrial application of case-based reasoning in the aluminium die-casting industry. This application assists the foundry engineer in the setting of parameters of a pressure die-casting machine for new dies. Wayland has been installed at a foundry for more than two years, and responsibility for maintenance of the program has been handed to foundry staff. Wayland is used daily by engineers, die designers and sales staff. It provides experience of pressure die casting accumulated by the foundry over many years.

One problem facing the industrial automation industry is the shorter product life cycles than the life expectancy of an automated facility. This means that financially justifying the investment in an automated production line can no longer be performed on a single product. Hence, the system supplied must be capable of fast reconfiguration in order to produce a range of products during their working life. This paper shows that the use of DeviceNet fieldbus technology can greatly improve the speed and flexibility of making changes to an automated control system. Its use also impacts on the ease of maintenance of the system as well as giving the capability for greatly improve diagnostics. Using network management software to contain all of the complexity of the installation also improves the system documentation as it is performed automatically with any changes that are made to the system.
