Proceedings of the colloquium on computing and controldivision 'Issues for networked interpersonal communicators' (16 May 1997, Savoy Place, London) are presented. Six reports were discussed at the colloquium. The main topics were the following ones: information sharing beyond the network computer, effective user interfaces, adaptive retrieval information, information quality in distributed environment, interpersonal communications.

Interoperability, cost, and time-to-market considerations are driving software production toward the use of as much off-the-shelf code as possible. Product cycle times of 12-18 months are now moving toward 3-4 months. This does achieve cost savings, but it also creates new problems. Off-the shelf code may not work as efficiently or effectively in a new environment. In addition, the off-the-shelf code may have hidden, perhaps malicious functionality that will be difficult to discern before it causes problems. This paper looks further into these two concerns about using COTS and into what, if anything, can be done to reduce them.

Composite component manufacturers are often faced with having to quote and produce products `Built-to-Print'. Often times polymer composite component blueprints/drawings/CAD files are designed under insufficient paradigms and mirror features common in metal components. The R&D work in intelligent decision support tools for composites focuses on the conceptual design stages. The conceptual composite assembly is discussed on the basis of detailed design studies or conceptual manufacturing process plans. The manufacturing process sequence includes: the composite fabrication processes used to produce the component;the machining and post-process steps that add features to components or subassemblies;and the bonding and fastening sequences.

Employment assurance is very important problem. Particular measures are necessary in case of disabled people. Application of technology to assist people with handicaps is now commonplace. The level of technology employed varies considerably as do the range of applications for which it is used. It is nonetheless fact that full potential of technical assistance tools has not been fully realized;not due to lack of technical genius to develop devices, but rather because of less than adequate service delivery structures. This was recognized some years ago and led to many research projects designed to identify the best practice and to propose new services where necessary. Evaluation of required equipment and services has now been performed and recommendations have been given.

This paper describes modelling and control of a high speed manufacturing machine where the control problem involves continuous path tracking to make a compliant machine tool follow a pre-determined 3-D profile. A typical application area is the area of robot arm control in material finishing processes. Open-loop control via a stepper motor drive is compared to closed-loop control using a DC servo motor with position feedback. In this second configuration, the response of the system using a conventional PI controller is also compared with that of a fuzzy logic controller.

A mechatronic solution ensuring consistent surface quality is to develop intelligent control of electro-hydraulic servosystems, which vibrate the cutter head in anti phase to cancel out the inherent mechanical forced vibrations. To fulfill the task, an optical-laser non-contact in process measuring system is developed. Following this, a hydraulic digital valve is employed as actuator which can meet the needs of quick response and high switching speed performance. Finally, it is shown that certain machine fault features are inherent within manufactured product surface contours.
