Position control of a switched reluctance motor based on exact input-output linearisation of its torque production characteristics, in an inner control loop, and a simple sliding mode outer control loop using fuzzy logic has been demonstrated. Experimental results confirm the anticipated behaviour of this scheme. The exercise has highlighted some of the advantages of fuzzy systems, notably their flexibility. It has also given some indication of the appropriateness of fuzzy logic in two different situations. It is concluded that learning and representing highly nonlinear functions for which accurate analytic expressions are not available exploits many of the strengths of fuzzy logic. Implementing a simple nonlinear control scheme, for which analytic expressions and established control theory are the starting point exploits fewer. Overall, however, it has been demonstrated that it is appropriate to employ fuzzy systems within larger control system architectures specifically where nonlinear characteristics are required.< >

Programmable Transmission System (PTS) is designed to improve the flexibility and performance of wrapping and packaging machines. PTS replaces mechanical linkages with separately controlled servo motors. An example of which is the horizontal flow-wrapping machine used to wrap solid or filled bar products. The purpose of this work is to discuss the application of the PTS to this type of machine with emphasis directed to the requirements of the machine and what features of the PTS are used to address them.

This study focuses on the VME based multi processor, multi axis control system which has wide application in high precision production machines. A mechatronics approach adopted throughout the project resulted in a very dramatic improvement in system performance. It will be shown that state control techniques offer a viable approach to designing distributed intelligent controls for fast acting precision servosystems. Two self commissioning strategies are implemented. Results obtained are discussed and compared to the 'tuning parameters' set by an experienced commissioning engineer.

A control scheme for the control of an automatic flexible assembly machine is presented. The design of the assembly machine is postulated based on techniques offered by new programmable controllers and has three sub-systems, two of which are servo driven subsystems. The design is completed through establishment of a number of positions defined as points. These points are formed into trajectories. This design is found to perform and accurately computes according to the design intent, with the trajectory tracking performed accurately for varying speeds. This shows that the ability to produce good motion designs coupled with intelligent motion controllers provides a new opportunity to develop co-operating multi-axis systems especially when used for assembly tasks.

Motion controllers are an essential component of modern manufacturing machinery. The computer controlsystems are a key part in designing and building production machines. Due to a lack of solid mechanical parts to automatically link motions, coordination and synchronisation problems among the interactive motions are the one of major barriers which can hamper further advances with the new design philosophy. The tight control and flexible operation of a machine with multi-axes can only be realised if the software controlled drives can be properly coordinated and synchronised. This paper presents the concept and implementation of a scheme that uses a fuzzy logic control approach to realise enhanced drive synchronisation. A new master-slave configuration using fuzzy logic is developed. Imperfect synchronisation can be corrected on-line. The simulation and experimental results show that the fuzzy based 'closed loop synchronisation mechanism' gives enhanced performance when compared to conventional master-slave open loop synchronisation techniques.
