The idea of worst case identification is to obtain approximations to an unknown system from a set of noisy data either transfer function measurements or input/output measurements. The paper discusses choices of inputs for a robust, convergent algorithm, the disadvantage of least squares fits in that worst case errors will be as bad as a convergence rate achieved with stable inputs.

With the growing interest in the use of system identification as a means to build models for control design, the paper presents methods for robust model based control design in order to reach the goal of high performance plant control. The traditional identification method delivers a model in the form of a linear time invariant finite dimensional system also called nominal model and not all controllers suited for the nominal model will perform well with the plant. The main principle tackled in this report is that robustness must be traded off versus nominal performance.
