System identification complements not only the robustness requirement of maintaining control in the face of plant uncertainty but thrives on the symbiotic relationship with it. This relationship exists as an iterative process of identification and control design while the identification requirement derives it specification from the closed loop performance with the previous controller and delivers an error bound that dictates the design of the successive controller. This paper applies and extends techniques in the emerging field of HINF identification to the problem of identifying a real plant as well as estimating the called a priori information necessary to determine worst case error bounds.

This paper describes on-going research that is currently being undertaken by the control Theory and Applications Centre, Coventry University, into developing controllers which make use of both model-based and rule-based techniques. The resulting combined controller are able to make 'better' use of available information on the plant and investigative studies to date indicate that such an approach can provide for adaptivity within a robust controller design framework.

Two software packages are introduced to aid in the task of tuning PID controllers. The first is MASTERTUNE which has been developed to automatically determine the necessary PID parameters by interfacing to existing plant controllers and automatically downloading the values upon completion of the tuning exercise. The second is PRODESIGN, a novel digital control strategy involving the proportional-integral-plus (PIP) algorithm. It provides a complete design environment allowing the user to implement advanced control strategies where required. For cases where a very long time delay clearly degrades the PI(D) response, it was found that PIP produced excellent response.
