The use of model-based approaches is proposed to improve the control performance of an industrial polymerization reactor. This involves the development of a process model using system identification techniques, the simulation of the plant within the Simulink environment to allow for the design and validation of control strategies. From these studies a Smith Predictor was implemented to significantly improve the polymer viscosity control. A hardware platform is developed to facilitate the implementation of sophisticated algorithms such as recursive least squares, that could not be accommodated on the existing DCS.

The development and implementation of a 'Fibertron' machine vision system has provided the first continuous, quantitative measurement of refined wood fibers in the composite panel industry. This work highlights the advantages of machine vision in situations where a human in performing a visual assessment of a product, as a basis on which to control a key part of the manufacturing process. The strictly logical evolutionary nature of the control algorithm involved produces a control strategy which is not influenced by difference of opinion, subjectiveness, or memory loss, and which is able to adapt to both short- and long-term changes in processing conditions.

A variety of wet-lap thickness control strategies in hardboard mills is evaluated. The control of the wet-lap forming process is described. It is indicated that the thickness of finished hardboard is affected by fiber type, structure, density, steam press cycle conditions and wet-lap thickness. It is also indicated that the main cause of variability in dry board thickness is due to inadequate control over pre-press wet-lap thickness. The wetlap-forming process was not previously controlled due to the long transport lag between the flow value and the measurement transducer. The appropriate strategies are implemented.

Implementing QFD requires a certain amount of adaptation to fit to a particular company and project requirements. It is important for users to recognize the reason for its use and to identify the limitations. The main potential barriers to successful implementation of QFD are the difficulty of listening to the voice, misinterpretation of message, constantly changing customer needs and too many customers and needs. To understand how these factors affect a project requires static/dynamic analysis and levels analysis. Two components of the KATE-toolbox for reasoning with cases are presented: KATE induction that generates decision trees and/or decision rules from cases, and KATE-CBR that supports case-based reasoning activity. KATE-induction automatically builds a decision tree from a database of training cases. KATE-CBR is a module that performs CBR and is able to index dynamically the cases during the problem stage, bypassing general knowledge problems such as rules or decision trees. In this effort to integrate induction and CBR, four levels of integration are defined to come up with architectures that bring maximum benefit for the client. This integration has consolidated the maintenance experiences that comes from different maintenance teams located at different sites in a real scale environment.

VHDL is the ieeE standard hardware description language. It consists of all the features of a conventional programming language plus additional structures required to represent hardware. These programming structures enable concurrent execution to be defined and mechanisms to describe the assignment of values to signals after delays. The paper describes a method of automating the design route from VHDL to FPGA. This method employs a VHDL compiler to translate structural VHDL representation into a suitable netlist format and processed by the FPGA software to produce the final personality file. The method enables all design decomposition to be carried out in the VHDL environment and thus totally under the control of the designer.

The paper presents a review of some historical perspectives of handwriting recognition systems. There are two classes of handwriting recognition and processing systems: 1) On line recognition which means that the handwriting is sampled, digitized and processed in real time as it is written, 2) Off line means that the handwriting is processed after it has been written and only a black and white, grey scale or colour image of the writing is available and there is no information about it. These systems also use algorithms for recognition and current pen-based computers are being upgraded and modified so that they will achieve advantages over current keyboard/printer based systems.

Design Function Deployment (DFD) allows quality to be built into the development of a product or process, at the early stages of engineering design, by using a planned and controlled approach to design. DFD provides the necessary platform for a design for quality system by allowing (1) the consideration of many design solutions before find selection, (2) evaluation and optimization at various stages of the design process, (3) the use of several design methods to minimize variation, (4) the use of emerging technologies and materials, and (5) the adoption of a simultaneous design approach.
