This paper describes a project using a Case-based reasoning system for troubleshooting purposes. The problem domain is the production equipment of a battery separator manufacturing site. The aim of the project is to assist the users to diagnose faults thereby reducing down time. Case-based reasoning (CBR) is a new approach using knowledge from past experiences to solve or evaluate new problems. CBR suggests actions to take or makes recommendations by comparing (matching) the current situation with similar previous situations. The paper outlines the development of a CBR Express system at Cookson Entek Limited It explains the problem domain and the type of data acquired. The paper gives some details about the benefits and limitations of this technology. Suggestions are made for further improvements to the software which would increase the performance of the case-base. The paper concludes with an outlook for future work at Cookson Entek.

The documentation needed by users of computer systems is always a problem, particularly if their system is to be applied in real time or interactive applications. The iee have produced a guide to help users to make sure that they ask for and are provided with the software documentation that they need. The authors consider The Guidelines for the Documentation of Computer Software for Real Time and Interactive systems which provides users with comprehensive guidelines for the documentation of software over the life cycle of the required system.< >

Current implementations of aircraft flight controlsystems are an amalgam of numerous, discrete algorithms and various switching mechanisms. The switching mechanisms bring the algorithms into play either independently or in some form of combination. Advanced computing techniques, such as expert systems, can play a role by separating out the algorithm scheduling and making it more visible. By lessening the complexity both the integrity and capability should be improved. An alternative and more controversial approach is to use adaptive, learning and optimisation techniques such as neural networks. These offer advantages by removing the need for algorithm creation through learning, provide graceful degradation when elements fail and can adapt to subsystem failures. However at present this approach is not welcomed as conventional verification and validation techniques cannot be employed. The author discusses the role of non-algorithmic software.< >

A canard-controlled missile airframe configuration with a twist-and-steer (or polar) control system affords economies in design and kinematic performance but at present does not permit a direct analytical solution for the optimum guidance and roll control autopilot laws. The development of a stable roll loop of adequate bandwidth and response is fundamental in a twist-and-steer missile. Whilst the application of modern control theory has been successfully applied to the design of aileron-constrained time-invariant cases, its extension to the nonlinear case requires further development. Roll loop design is commonly carried out using frequency-domain methods coupled with detailed mathematical modelling and digital simulation. The use of commercially available control system design programs facilitates loop design and sensitivity studies across the operating envelope. Describing function techniques may be used to investigate limit cycle stability etc. The paper discusses the aerodynamics and the computer-aided design.< >

The teaching of DSP tended to become algorithmically very mathematical as the subject evolved into an autonomous discipline but the relevance of this approach is questionable when the undergraduates concerned are largely interested in control engineering or seismology. Those studying a multidisciplinary engineering course may well have a basic grounding in electronics and also in real time and embedded computing. This is the case for Southampton Institute's BSc in Industrial systems Technology. Open University undergraduates are often following multidisciplinary profiles and in this respect the challenge to staff at both institutions had an element of commonality. The objectives of the two course teams were different and this is reflected in the approaches taken. The authors describe these two approaches.< >

The three principal military high speed data bus standards are Draft Proposal STANAG 3910, SAE AS 4074.1 Linear Token Passing Bus and AS 4074.2 High Speed Ring Bus. There is a significant difference between 3910 and the SAE standards, in that 3910 makes use of the existing STANAG 3838 (Mil Std. 1553B) to control access to a high speed (20 Mbit/sec) channel. In meeting the needs of time critical systems the only difference between 3910 and 1553B is the message length that can be transmitted within the latency bounds of 1553B. Nevertheless, 3910 has a number of significant advantages for near term and retro-fit applications. In particular, the tried and tested practice of co-siting the data communications control function with the controlling system element can be retained; the way in which communications and systemscontrol is to be achieved with truly general purpose high speed data buses such as those produced by SAE is yet to be resolved.< >

Compliance in robot structures is a fact of life, all mechanical components have a finite stiffness and drive systems always have some give in them. This paper describes our work on a very compliant 2DOF arm which is controlled using absolute position information rather than the more usual joint angle control found in Industrial Robots. We also aim to show that it is not strictly necessary to measure joint angles on a robot, and that true Cartesian position information can be used at servo-rates.

This paper describes a course in Cybernetics and modelling of systems. Some of the course provides experience in testing parts of real systems, and identifying their dynamic characteristics. Some of this work involves the use of personal computers with suitable analog-digital conversion interfaces, so that students get experience with many uses of computers. In 1979, when many micros deployed in one teaching laboratory became a possibility, a teaching package, called Cycloid, was developed to run on the RM 380Z. The main objective of Cycloid is to reinforce lectures on controlsystems given to 2nd and 3rd year BSc courses in Cybernetics. It provides interactive design experience of single-input single-output linear systems, highlighting the correlation between frequency and time domain responses for quite a range of servo and process controlsystems.

The author is a member of the Performance Engineering division within British Telecom and the division undertakes performance evaluation on new equipment and services being introduced into BT's network. The author's lecture concerns one example of such studies. An important feature of the new equipment is the use of processors to perform realtime control of the equipment and the services provided by the equipment. A control processor typically consists of a number of CPUs, a main memory and a secondary store, all being interconnected by databuses. In its real-time control environment, the processor must have an adequate rate of data transfer between its main memory and secondary store. This is the specific topic of the author's lecture.

This project concerns the design, development and production of a modular workhandling system carried out in the Department of Engineering Production at Loughborough University in collaboration with Martonair UK Ltd under the auspices of the SERC robotics initiative. Although all of the traditional actuators could be employed in modular positioning elements this project has been concerned largely with the evolution of a family of pneumatically actuated modules to provide both end-stop positioning and servo-controlled 'point to point' positioning of payloads.
