RaPiD demonstrates some of the benefits of using declarative graphics to expert assisted design and to the representation of shape and conformation of component. It provides a CAD-style graphical interface for both instructional and professional design of dental prosthesis called removal partial denture (RPD). The logic database model gives a clear, formal underpinning of knowledge based, critiquing style design tool. The use of logic grammars in RaPiD for describing the component shape of RPD was suggested during the observation of the hand drawing of designs.

The development of a driver interface for autonomous intelligent cruise control (AICC) was among the areas studied by the PROMETHEUS research program. Two interface configurations were implemented and tested: one uses six steering wheel switches with flexible format display and the other has three steering wheel switches for driver controls, increment set speed, decrement set speed and cruise/cancel. The driver interface for cruise control was not found to be the most appropriate model on which to base an interface for AICC. AICC systems should be designed in such a way that it reflects the way drivers will use the system and the way drivers actually control their vehicles.

design features for visual, audio and tactile interfaces for vehicle control systems are evaluated. Many useful ideas for tactile design can be derived from existing switch configurations. Providing tactile feedback could help solve the problem of too much information being on display and the driver taking his eyes off the road for too long. Audio feedback complements the tactile feedback from switches and also helps the driver to keep his eyes on the road. It is essential for Intelligent Cruise control that information should only be displayed visually if there is no reasonable alternative.

The impact of the resulting increase in information regarding driver performance must be carefully monitored in order to ensure that the influx of integrated driver support systems will be beneficial in terms of traffic safety and driving performance. The continued and increasing usage of the generic evaluation method (GEM) by the automotive industry will result in the improved design of driver support system interfaces and should provide a basis for further standardization and validation of evaluation methods. A database of reference values and comparable evaluation results will permit confidentiality of design details which should encourage cooperation among researchers and the automotive industry.

The use of a time headway (TH) feedback system may decrease the TH adopted by a driver, although these behavioral changes are likely to be a reaction to the system implemented, and not due to the general adoption of increased THs. Installation of a PC-driven microwave radar, for example, may be generally accepted by drivers, but the implications of the likely cost of the system are unclear. Its practical value for reducing adopted THs may be limited in traffic conditions where focused attention occurs or a degree of social pressure is imposed upon the driver. As a learning device, the system may not be particularly effective.

This paper aims at establishing an interface model where a wide variety of different aspects of interfaces can be analyzed unambiguously, in particular the timing aspects. During the design and development of a modular system, the modules are considered separately and while developing a particular module, the designer formulates protocols characterizing the interface. Later, the separately developed modules are combined and at this point the consistency of the associated protocols must be ensured. By formalizing the protocols rigorously, a mechanized analysis becomes possible.

A hyperbook is an electronic book which incorporates hypertext features, paper book features, and some other computer facilities. The hyperbook was implemented and evaluated in order to demonstrate the appropriateness of adapting the book metaphor. The objectives of the evaluation were mainly to assess system usability and utility. In particular, it aimed to verify that the hyperbook system was easy to use and understand to a similar degree by everyone, regardless of his computer expertise.
