Torbert proposed eight stages of personal development that an individual manager may go through based on ideas of ego development in the field of psychology. He extended these stages to cover the development of the organisations. In this article, an attempt is made to extend such thinking to the development of information systems.

The paper describes on-going work that is currently taking place in adopting non-linear fuzzy models, represented as three dimensional piecewise linear surfaces, for use within non-linear control strategies. Graphical results are presented and comparisons are drawn between the fuzzy modelling approach and that of the more traditional non-linear ARMA model structures.

Inductive learning techniques offer the potential for learning to classify whether a given situation is `safe' or `unsafe' based on past incident data. The most common learning algorithms are developments of ID3, CART or AQ. The problems of using such algorithms for learning whether a situation is `safe' or `unsafe' are examined. It is shown that the primary problem with the use of these algorithms in the area of safety remains the manner in which numerical attributes are discretized.

This paper addresses the problem of designing guidance, navigation and controlsystems for Autonomous - Unmanned -Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) to achieve accurate tracking of reference paths defined in a universal reference frame. The theoretical framework adopted is illustrated with a design example in which recent developments in multivariable control theory and classical results in navigation and guidance were applied to the design of a trajectory following system for the AUV MARIUS (Marine Utility Vehicle System). The key ideas in the design methodology are to clearly state performance specifications in the frequency domain, and to use design tools that explicitly address these types of specifications. Thus, the natural constraint that the navigation, control and guidance systems have decreasing bandwidths, can be directly incorporated in the initial phase of the project. Analysis of the integrated system is performed using a simulation package that allows the user to assess the impact of the navigation, guidance, and control algorithms on the dynamic behaviour of the vehicle.

Computer technology has improved rapidly over the years, and with more powerful machines becoming ever smaller and cheaper;there is no indication of the trend slowing. The latest growth area is in portable personal computers providing powerful facilities to the mobile user. Alongside this development has been improvements to the human computer interface (HCI) leading to the modern notebook computer. Recent developments in the HCI, especially the development of interfaces and support software based on a stylus have led to the concept of pen-computers. These can fully exploit this mobility as all user-computer interaction is conducted on the computer's display using a pen rather than a keyboard. The resulting machine could in principle be used with no more difficulty than a pen and paper. The major area of technological development required for such a device to become practicable is in the area of handwriting recognition as this is the obvious and necessary method for entering data onto such a device. Cursive script recognition (CSR) research aims to comprehend unconstrained, natural handwriting.
