The increasing penetration from intermittent renewable distributed energy resources in distribution grid brings along challenges in grid operation and planning. To evaluate the impact on the grid voltage profile, grid losses, and discrete actions from assets (e.g. transformer tap changes), quasi-static simulation is an appropriate method. Quasi-static time series and Monte-Carlo simulation requires a tremendous number of power flow calculations (PFCs), which can be significantly accelerated with a parallel high-performancecomputing (HPC)-PFC solver. In this paper, we propose a HPC-PFC-solver-based grid simulation (parallel simulation) approach for a multi-core CPU platform as well as a greedy method, which can prevent the errors caused by simultaneous parallel simulation. The performance of the proposed approach and the comparison is demonstrated with two use cases.

There are an increasing number of applications of automated image analysis in which imaging is part of an instrumentation or process control system. A variety of industrial processes, including quality control and assembly, robotic, security and other applications make use of machine vision. Such embedded applications often require performance to be tuned in various ways to satisfy time constraints, which may vary through the lifetime of the application. There may, in addition, be a requirement to produce versions of an imaging product targetted at different classes of user, to satisfy various market niches, for example. It is therefore important to develop software tools which allow developers to relatively easily target a variety of computational engines. Possible target systems may include PC, dedicated microprocessor or digital signal processor, multiprocessors, or custom hardware. We report our experience in applying hardware compilation technology in an FPGA-based system to some typical image processing tasks.

The need for providing gas turbine engine control with more sophisticated controls that reduce cost is discussed. Interest is given in the exploitation of Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) technologies reduces size, cost and weight will provide for this need of controlling gas turbine engines. A number of key COTS technologies are identified: increased miniaturization using multichip modules (MCM);use of COTS databases from automotive applications;use of non-MIL SPEC components and high temperature electronics;and smart actuators and sensors. A review of the technologies and approaches that highlights the need to change the Full Authority Digital Engine controller (FADEC) architecture is presented.

As gas turbine controls become increasingly complex and development timescales get shorter,the need for systems to work right first time becomes more and more important. A major part of "proving" systems before they fly is by use of simulations which demonstrate the performance and safety features required and, in line with the systems being simulated, these too are becoming ever more complex. Lucas Aerospace has been an engine component supplier, providing pumps, fuel metering units and electronic units for a wide range of aero gas turbines. Simulation has been performed at component level, modelling the pressures, forces and flows relating to a particular valve, for instance. The development of more complex simulations was limited by computing power and the availability of suitable tools. Lucas now concentrates on high value added systems supply. This move from a component to a systems supplier involves not just the components but also the interfaces between the hydromechanics, electronics, control laws and sensors, as well as the pilot and engine interfaces. The use of simulation has become more important in developing systems in which the component elements interact in a sensible and safe manner. As computing power continues to increase and more and better tools become available, the level of simulation complexity increases. This paper discusses how various simulation techniques and tools are being used to aid the design of control systems for modern aeroengine gas turbines.
