One of the most common database mining tasks is that of inducing relationships which hold between attributes of a database relation. Rules which are discovered to apply to all of the extensional database are called strong rules. Strong rules are useful for decision support and are often used in expert systems and expert database systems. The STRIP algorithm (Strong Rule Induction In Parallel), which discovers strong rules within a database relation using parallel techniques, is presented. How the rules induced using STRIP can be used for implementing a semantic query pre-processor among other potential uses is discussed. How parallel processing can be used to speed up database mining operations is also discussed.

The feasibility of automating the control and cleaning of rapid gravity filters in a clarification tank through the application of a suitable programmable logic controller (PLC) based strategy is examined. Results obtained via the simulator indicate that features such as fault detection and handling capabilities proved to be an added bonus aside from being a low cost solution, and could be easily integrated within a total control strategy.

MATLAB, SIMULINK and dSPACE control implementation tools are applied to the idle speed control of an internal combustion engine. The different control design techniques under examination include classical, fuzzy, H-infinity, predictive and variable structure methods. The controllers are assessed for their transient and steady state performance, sensitivity to load disturbance, robustness, control signal activity and the algorithm size, complexity and execution time.

A mechatronic solution ensuring consistent surface quality is to develop intelligent control of electro-hydraulic servo systems, which vibrate the cutter head in anti phase to cancel out the inherent mechanical forced vibrations. To fulfill the task, an optical-laser non-contact in process measuring system is developed. Following this, a hydraulic digital valve is employed as actuator which can meet the needs of quick response and high switching speed performance. Finally, it is shown that certain machine fault features are inherent within manufactured product surface contours.

Any feedback control scheme implemented on a solar thermal power plant must incorporate an adaptive mechanism to operate effectively. However, on-line estimation based upon high order transfer function models tend to perform poorly with slow parameter convergence being the norm. Additionally, lower order transfer function models tend to yield unreliable performance and inadequate control bandwidths when used on this plant. Pre-scheduling is therefore an attractive preposition for this type of solar power plant where model dynamics can be accurately defined. This paper details the development of pre-scheduled adaptive mechanism based on a physical model of the Acurex solar power plant at the Plataforma Solar de Almeria.

A mechatronics approach is used to improve the performance of a solid-liquid separation device. The basic principles of the chematronics task are described by referring to a computer controlled, pilot scale, pressure leaf filtration rig capable of measuring in-situ solids concentration profiles. A combination of suitable sensors, transducers and control software is used to show how data can be acquired to correctly control and monitor all aspects of the filter cycle and yield a flexible apparatus capable of operating in a number of modes.
