This paper compares the results of four robust multivariable design techniques applied to the depth control of a nonlinear Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) subjected to parameter perturbations. Three nonlinear control techniques, namely, input-output(i/o) linearization control, input-output linearization control with sliding mode control and input-output linearization control with adaptive fuzzy control are studied. The fourth technique is the H∞ loop shaping design procedure using multiobjective optimization for the simultaneous design of robust stability and performance.

The design, development and implementation of a research programme to investigate methods of autonomous navigation for unmanned aircraft (UMA) using the Global Positioning System are described. The XRAE1 air vehicle and its gust-insensitive control system were used to integrate a GPS `engine' with the digital flight control system. Data gathering flight trials were conducted to establish GPS performance under flight conditions. Autonomous navigation algorithms were designed, developed, and flight tested in the complete system.

Providing tactile feedback could help solve the problem of too much information being on display and the driver taking his eyes off the road for too long. Audio feedback complements the tactile feedback from switches and also helps the driver to keep his eyes on the road. It is essential for Intelligent Cruise control that information should only be displayed visually if there is no reasonable alternative.

The performance of a longitudinal controller for the ARMOR unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) RC model subjected to gust disturbances is analyzed. Time simulations performed are in perfect agreement but do not exhibit any influence due to the nonlinear characteristics. Changes in physical parameters are perfectly transparent to the controller, except for the phugoid zone where the gust sensitivity behaves like in an open loop. Actuator quality, particularly the engine, are of great importance for good gust disturbance control.

The use of neural networks for satisfactory nonlinear depth control of a unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) was demonstrated. The single hidden-layer, three neuron feedforward network proved to be the best overall controller of the UUV in this application. performance parameters fell within the required criteria and was robust enough to cope with unfamiliar terrain and tidal-like disturbances. Initial training by backpropagation was improved upon by use of reinforcement training techniques of which the Alopex algorithm proved to be the most effective in finding a minimum global error solution.

The impact of the resulting increase in information regarding driver performance must be carefully monitored in order to ensure that the influx of integrated driver support systems will be beneficial in terms of traffic safety and driving performance. The continued and increasing usage of the generic evaluation method (GEM) by the automotive industry will result in the improved design of driver support system interfaces and should provide a basis for further standardization and validation of evaluation methods. A database of reference values and comparable evaluation results will permit confidentiality of design details which should encourage cooperation among researchers and the automotive industry.

The project also aims to establish an effective, multi-modal Traffic and Travel Information Center (TTIC) which would operate in real time.
