Two software packages are introduced to aid in the task of tuning PID controllers. The first is MASTERTUNE which has been developed to automatically determine the necessary PID parameters by interfacing to existing plant controllers and automatically downloading the values upon completion of the tuning exercise. The second is PRODESIGN, a novel digital control strategy involving the proportional-integral-plus (PIP) algorithm. It provides a complete design environment allowing the user to implement advancedcontrol strategies where required. For cases where a very long time delay clearly degrades the PI(D) response, it was found that PIP produced excellent response.

The developmental stages leading to the use of artificial neural network (ANN) in the automation of water clarification control are presented. Before ANN, the purchase of an equipment to automate dosing was considered a great success. However, the automated dosing system proved inaccurate at times. Analysis revealed some discrepancies between meter readings and laboratory readings on color at high turbidity. Chemists suggested that other variables such as temperature and conductivity may play a role in clarification control. It seemed that with more data available a more accurate law could be determined using ANN. Finally, ANN brought a clearer picture of the situation. Inferential estimation can therefore prove to be a cost-effective means of determining plant measurements for variables which are impractical to measure. By this means, it may also be possible to speed up the sampling time of a measured variable for more accurate control.

The paper describes the design of an advancedcontrol system for the PUMA560 industrial robotic manipulator using a high-performance parallel transputer (T805) network. The Transputer Interface Board (TIE) which establishes a transputer link to the 6503 microprocessors of the PUMA arm controller, is detailed. Much more flexibility can be achieved with this system. Results are reported from a feasibility study on the use of parallel processing platforms for real-time simulation and control. This has developed a back-end accelerator which takes the output of SIMULINK-an icon based menu driven package- and automatically generates executable parallel code without user intervention. Hence the user can design and simulate a control system using the familiar SIMULINK interface, execute the simulation in real time, and then analyse the results using, for example, the powerful facilities of MATLAB. An example from the chemical industry is used to support the results presented. Follow up work on the inclusion of advanced feedback control schemes is discussed. In particular, the inclusion of a module for generalised predictive control is presented.< >

A discussion is given on the fault tolerance of parallel and distributed control systems. There are a number of additional difficulties when designing fault-tolerance into parallel systems compared with the design of sequential systems. In addition to the problems associated with single processor system design, such as error detection and system recovery, parallel system designs must also consider error confinement, communication faults, distributed placement of fault-tolerant mechanisms and coordination of error detection and system recovery. The complexity of parallel and distributed systems puts considerable emphasis on a system designer if systems are to be resilient to faults. Automated and semi-automated tools and language facilities are required to help with such designs. The paper considers work performed that is designed to deal with some of these problems in an attempt to make parallel and distributed systems both efficient and fault-tolerant-the goal for designing all such systems.< >

The technique of eigenstructure assignment (A.N. Andry et al., 1983) is applied to the flight control problem in order to produce specific aircraft handling qualities. Eigenstructure assignment, however, does not directly consider system robustness. The robustness problem may be addressed by the use of the linear quadratic regulator or LQR which allows the choice of the state feedback gains in an optimal manner such that multivariable gain and phase margins of + infinity , -6 dB and +or-60 degrees respectively may be guaranteed. The behaviour of the LQR controller is determined by the choice of two weighting matrices Q and R within a quadratic cost function. The problem is then the choice of these positive definite symmetric weighting matrices such that an eigenstructure is assigned to the system via the LQR. This will provide a controller which both satisfies handling quality requirements and is robust.< >

The Lackenby Coil Plate Mill is a large-scale steel plant on Teeside. control of the rolling process is complicated by the interactions along the stands and the effects of the stresses set up on the material between the stands. control of width and gauge (thickness) is controlled by a series of feedback and feedforward control loops between more that one stand and special devices called loopers, which aid in assessing the interstand tension. If the tension is too great between stands, the material is stretched. Under these circumstances it is necessary to reduce the relative angular velocity error between adjacent stands and also adjust the width of the roll gap (roller force). As material passes down the rolling process, it is important that any disturbances, seen as a result of imperfections in the material, hardness differences and temperature variations (skid-chills), are rejected by the control system. The paper was based upon a short consultancy. The aim was to demonstrate that, using parallel processing it is possible to speed up the simulation of such a plant markedly. The requirement was to use a subset of the complete plant: a stand/looper/stand segment.< >

The paper presents an investigation into the utilisation of parallel processing techniques in the real-time simulation of a flexible manipulator system. The performance demands of modern control systems require the employment of complex algorithms with demanding operations. This, in turn, leads to shorter sampling times. Therefore, real-time performances with complex algorithms become difficult to achieve. Many demanding complex processes cannot be satisfactorily realised with conventional uni-processor and multi-processor systems. Thus, alternative strategies where multi-processor based systems are employed, making effective use of parallel processing techniques, could provide suitable solutions. A finite dimensional simulation of a single-link flexible manipulator system is developed through discretisation of the governing dynamic equation of the system both in time and space co-ordinates using finite difference approximation methods. The proposed algorithm allows for dynamic modification of the boundary conditions and inclusion of distributed actuator and sensor terms in the system dynamic equation.< >
