The impact of the resulting increase in information regarding driver performance must be carefully monitored in order to ensure that the influx of integrated driver support systems will be beneficial in terms of traffic safety and driving performance. The continued and increasing usage of the generic evaluation method (GEM) by the automotive industry will result in the improved design of driver support system interfaces and should provide a basis for further standardization and validation of evaluation methods. A database of reference values and comparable evaluation results will permit confidentiality of design details which should encourage cooperation among researchers and the automotive industry.

The role of agents in the personal electronics of the future and some of the technical ideas which make this role possible are discussed. A view of the future is sketched based on current trends, principally, on the convergence of technologies, known as multimedia. Why the concept of agents is so important in enabling this view of the future to come about is explained. The main characteristics of the agent model adopted in the research at the Sharp Laboratories of Europe are described. Finally, comments are made on the appearance of agent-based products.

We are interested in the monitoring and diagnosis of dynamic systems. We use implicit behavioural models supporting model based approaches. This work is driven by the needs of and applied to, two gas turbines of very different size and power. In this paper we describe how we have developed a system to provide a comprehensive fault detection and diagnosis system. The work described here is currently working continuously, on line to a gas turbine in a major chemical plant.

This work is carried out with the aim of developing a digital data transfer technique between a PC and PLC to provide for the development and testing of multi-actuator fluid power simulation models. Several methods of encoding/decoding techniques have been developed and tested using simulation modeling. At relatively low cost, substantial improvements in the development and testing of PLC control and monitoring software have been achieved which extend to the simulation of authentic industrial fluid power systems.

Inferential estimation involves the determination of difficult to measure process variables from easily accessible secondary information. In addition to the capital costs of instrumentation, the downward pressure on manpower costs and overheads involved in maintenance make soft sensing attractive for industrial applications. Viscosity control in a polymerization reactor is addressed. The neural network based inferential estimation, where the network is trained to predict the polymer viscosity from past torque and viscosity data, is investigated. Results from the offline training of a feedforward network are presented and new work on online viscosity estimation using B-Spline networks is described.

The UK Department of Transport is aware that drivers should not be distracted from the primary task of safe vehicle control while using in-vehicle systems such as navigation and communication aids. It therefore asked ICE Ergonomics to develop a Code of Practice for the design installation and use of driver information systems. The code was developed by a working group of experts and researchers from the industry and research community. The first section of the code contains the objectives to be achieved and the second is a set of Design Guidelines to help systems designers, manufacturer installer and users achieve the objectives set out in the code. The guidelines summarize current ergonomics knowledge and provide sources for further information.

This paper describes modelling and control of a high speed manufacturing machine where the control problem involves continuous path tracking to make a compliant machine tool follow a pre-determined 3-D profile. A typical application area is the area of robot arm control in material finishing processes. Open-loop control via a stepper motor drive is compared to closed-loop control using a DC servo motor with position feedback. In this second configuration, the response of the system using a conventional PI controller is also compared with that of a fuzzy logic controller.

Gas is transported through a large network of pipes which are operated over a wide range of pressures. Within these networks are many elements which ensure that all the necessary working conditions are met. An important role is played by valves which can perform a variety of functions. A valve and actuator arrangement, which is used to throttle gas from streams found on offshore platforms, is considered. A diagnostic system which will detect and isolate specific faults is developed. British Gas supplied data of step tests from four different valves but additional data was required for the diagnostic procedure. A mathematical model of the system was derived using mathematical relationships and established laws which were interpreted in Matlab/Simulink.

A modular reconfigurable PC-Windows based software for the installation of University of Nottingham's flexible manufacturing cell is developed. This software enables a cell consisting of any relevant Denford equipment to be installed quickly and effectively. Also, the software is sufficiently general that it could be used to control and simulate cells consisting of other equipment and so new wider market is potentially available for systems, e.g. industrial cells which are non-competitive with Denfords. This paper outlines the development of the system and discusses the facilities available and how these may be combined to move towards an integrated system. Specifically, an indication of the particular needs of educational establishments is provided.

The development of autonomously guided vehicles for transportation between sections of industrial processes has been around for many years. Traditionally, vehicles were guided by tracks. Although this approach is successful, it is inflexible. Hence, new vehicles that move by recognising its environment using navigation techniques were developed. In this report, the use of Perception systems to obtain images of the environment is examined. Following this, it is shown that perception techniques involve teaching the vehicle on line. Finally, several multi-vehicle environments are evaluated.
