The need for new handling systems has been widely recognised, with manufacturers demanding ever higher output over shorter periods of time. This scenario is very evident in the snack food industry, where competition is becoming increasingly fierce. In view of this, a new handling system has been developed. The new system is capable of receiving randomly aligned flexibly packaged objects and aligning them to within 2 degrees of angular error and 4 millimeters of lateral position error.

A computer based simulation technique has been developed to aid the procurement and testing of programmable logic controllers (PLC) and condition monitoring software for electro-pneumatic and electro-hydraulic systems working in an industrial manufacturing environment. Condition monitoring, using measurable parameters such as pressure, flow rate and fluid quality, can provide a useful indication of the current running condition of such systems and a warning of possible mechanical failure. At relatively low cost, substantial improvements in the testing and development capability has been obtained.

The appropriate timing of a route guidance instruction is critical to the safety and acceptability of route guidance systems. If an instruction is given too early, the driver is likely to forget the information while attending to other driver tasks. Giving the instruction too late may cause the driver to hit the brakes suddenly or maintain safe driving but miss the maneuver completely. The most obvious criteria on which to base the timing of an instruction is the distance to the junction or predicted time to the junction based on current speed. Timing should also be adjusted according to passing vehicles and the number of traffic signals passed.

Caledonian Paper in Scotland, open since 1989, is one of the largest and most modern paper mills in Scotland. Recently, the mill wanted a way to capture the diagnosis and troubleshooting expertise from the most experienced craftsmen and make this available 24 hours a day throughout the plant. Since a standard rule based approach would not be appropriate to assist with the variable speed drives, a case based reasoning diagnosis system was developed using the ReMind software. Currently, the system is undergoing trials to determine its efficiency.

A virtual environment has been created which mimicked the real-world operation of the LongArm robotic system. In addition to considering an exact model of the physical system, on-line two-way data exchange between the actual robot and its virtual counterpart make actual real-time interaction possible. The designed interface allows the operator to experiment in the virtual mode with any commands later executed on the real system. There is an option to view a second set of graphics showing the kinematic relationships between the joints of the robot. This prototype is intended as an initial investigation into the design of virtual environments for the real-time control of dynamic systems.

The National Motorway Communications System Mark 2 (NMCS2) was developed to improve the efficiency of existing English road networks. NMCS2 is made up of local and wide area communication networks and operator interfaces. During a production period, members of an anthropocentric manufacturing cell will have an agreed workload to process. The sequence in which this workload is processed by the resources in the cell can affect the ability of the cell team to meet their targets. It is the objective of the sequencing adviser system to utilise the skill of the users such that the computer system advises the user on the most appropriate scheduling rule. A work undertaken as part of the pan European BRITE/EURAM Project 3302 is discussed. The objective of the project was to develop integrated Decision Support systems (DSSs) that will improve and support cooperations between business, design, planning and manufacturing activities. The project also aimed to develop technologies that support and enhance human skill and judgement. In this project, the sequencing adviser formed part of the Scheduling DSS.

The Analytical Process control (APC) System, installed on the No.5 Electrolytic Tinplating Line (ETL) at British Steel Tinplate's Trostre Works, South Wales, is discussed. The APC System aims to provide automatic solution sampling to achieve on-line real-time analysis and closed-loop control of the process solutions used on the No.5 ETL. Consideration is being given to extending the APC System to embrace the No.4 ETL. The APC System also has the potential to be developed to allow the robot to automatically decide to override the sequence of sampling and priorities when solutions fall outside the quality control analysis range and carry out more frequent sampling of these specific solutions until they are brought back within specification.

The DRIVE II project EDDIT (Elderly and Disabled Drivers' Information Telematics) has evaluated a number of in-vehicle telematic systems in terms of their potential value in extending the safe driving life of the elderly. Among the devices tested have been two reversing aids, three types of route guidance system and a head-up night vision enhancement system. The systems studied lead potentially to an increase in the driver's visual and mental workload. The safety implications of using such devices are very important for elderly people who may have difficulty dealing with the mental and cognitive rigors of driving.
