Combining asynchronous transfer mode over a passive optical network (APON) can provide broadband services as defined by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). The medium access control (MAC) layer is of primary importance to the access scheme as it controls the flow of traffic in the access network. It is therefore beneficial to model MACs for APONs to provide a performance evaluation without the expensive and time consuming job of building prototypes. This paper describes the simulation and performance comparison of a selection of proposed MAC schemes for APON, using the block oriented network simulator (BONeS) simulation software. The protocols simulated are all based on the TDM/TDMA technique, each with a different polling scheme, namely; demand, cyclic and semi-static. Both the development of a simulation strategy using a common simulation platform and the implementation of the permit distribution algorithm for the MAC protocols are described. The simulations show that the performance characteristics of the MACs are to a large degree comparable. There is, however, a superior performance in the parameters measured by the protocol based on demand polling.

Microscopic simulation has been a desire of traffic modellers and transportation planners for many years, since it is only by considering individual vehicles that congestion effects, variable driver behaviour effects, and accurate pollution emissions can be simulated. PARAMICS is presented as a tool for microscopic traffic simulation for congestion management. PARAMICS consists of a suite of software tools for the simulation of traffic conditions at the individual vehicle level. The current PARAMICS software accepts standard traffic modelling data formats, and includes a large number of transport planning and environmental features.

This work is carried out with the aim of developing a digital data transfer technique between a PC and PLC to provide for the development and testing of multi-actuator fluid power simulation models. Several methods of encoding/decoding techniques have been developed and tested using simulation modeling. At relatively low cost, substantial improvements in the development and testing of PLC control and monitoring software have been achieved which extend to the simulation of authentic industrial fluid power systems.

There has been great interest in trying to model plasma growth in practical discharge devices. The various numerical methods that have been used in fluid simulation codes and in the hybrid model of Boeuf and Pitchford are described and compared. Hybrid techniques combining Monte Carlo and fluid models show a great deal of promise although they make demands on computer time. With the enormous increase in computing power that has become available, however, a purely Lagrangian Monte Carlo calculation is still not feasible. The development of multiprocessor systems may change the situation.

SWOOPVR is a combination of the SWOOP mixed-mode industrial simulation language and VROOM VR graphics package. SWOOP is a simulation toolbox that runs under Turbo Pascal and allows the simulation of both discrete and continuous systems. On its own it allows simulation output as numerical data, statistical summaries, time-based graphs or 2-D animation. The VROOM graphics package can function independently as a VR toolbox, allowing the creation, placement and manipulation of 3-D objects within a virtual environment. VROOM runs on any 386 or 486 PC with only a VGA card required.
