A dichotomy exits within current research into robotics and intelligent systems. Conventional research centres on a traditional instructionalist model. In this paradigm the designer provides the robot system with relevant internal models of the real world and a set of instructions for carrying out clearly specifiable tasks. This approach often requires enormous computing power and can succeed in only the most constrained of circumstances. The limitations derive from the fact that the real world is not a neatly labelled place but presents an infinite variety of unquantifiably noisy input data and unforeseen circumstances. In contrast a new trend in robotics research supports the use of architectures based not on functional but on behavioural decomposition. These, so called, subsumption-based robots are equipped with a repertoire of behaviours and sets of instinct rules. Task competence is an emergent phenomenon achieved through experiential interaction with the real world. The paper details the results of an attempt to integrate these new philosophies into teaching at postgraduate level.

NETROLAB is a project funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) of the Higher education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) to provide a resource for the teaching of robotics and artificial intelligence. NETROLAB has been made possible by the advances in information technology, principally the development of the SuperJANET network and the concepts of the information superhighway. It aims to provide access to robotics technologies which would otherwise be unavailable to students and researchers. Once established, the scope for the development and extension of NETROLAB is wide, further enhancing its impact on robotics and AI teaching and research.

Lego robots are being used in teaching robotics at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. In the Intelligent Sensing and control course, students learn about robot architectures, simple control theory, and biological control systems. Building and programming Lego robots teaches students about the difficulties of dealing with real-world systems and avoids the typical problems of simulation: deciding which bits of the world are important, how to simulate them and to what precision.

The University of Plymouth Bachelor of Science degree in robotics and Automated Systems is an example of a new type of undergraduate engineering course in the United Kingdom, designed by practitioners to be both industrially relevant and at the same time attractive to students. Whether this is a course ahead of its time or in the vanguard of innovative, successful engineering courses which will change the public perception of engineering education remains to be seen. What is clear is that unless there is a significant increase in the number of graduate engineers, UK will continue to fall behind its major industrial competitors in the availability of trained manpower.

Cranfield University has been involved in robotics training since 1979 and was the first British university to offer a Master's Degree in Industrial robotics. The courses offered have been based on a practical, `hands-on' approach and focused on the requirements of the industry. The teaching module, Group Project module, and research module have provided a stimulating environment in which to learn and develop the skills necessary to enable graduates to make an immediate contribution to future employers. The post-graduate robotics training has been very successful and many Cranfield graduates now hold key positions in the robotics industry.

A robotics-based laboratory which seeks to provide a theme-based teaching environment for computer science at the University of Essex is described. The teaching environment facilitates the integration of coursework across the entire computer science curriculum and fosters a creative attitude while providing a framework that develops theoretical ability, subject knowledge, and practical implementation skills. This is achieved by utilizing a unique combination of physical systems, networks, simulators, and cross development tools, which has a substantially higher cost effectiveness than traditional laboratories.

A user perceives a robot as a solution to a problem, while an academic always perceives a robot as a problem. The user must look beyond the application of a robot to a certain problem. The academic looks within the robot and the application of the disciplines in which he is interested. At the University of Northumbria, robotics is being considered as a systems problem. This allows a common approach to be taken in the integration of the different academic engineering disciplines and in the definition and solution of the applications problem met by the user. It can be used in both understanding how the robot functions internally and how it fits as a component within an application.

A new trend in robotics research supports the use of architectures based not on functional but on behavioral decomposition. These so-called subsumption-based robots are equipped with a repertoire of behaviors and sets of instinct rules. Subsumption-based robots should be able to pursue behaviors in parallel without the need to map complex sensory inputs into complex internal models before acting. In order to optimize a system with respect both to the performance demands of the application and the design and manufacturing cost constraints, hardware and software systems should be developed concurrently. Attempts to integrate these philosophies into teaching at the postgraduate level are discussed.
