As the volume of information available to individuals in Western Society increases, so are the problems associated with unskilled and untrained 'novice' computer users accessing the technology for their own specific information needs. This discussion addresses some of these information retrieval problems in relation to the user interface mediating between the user and the information. A number of possible solutions are also presented.

Training is considered an important element in learning engineering courses. For the training to be effective, there must be an active student participation. To achieve this, the group size should be small in order to be able to give adequate feedback to the student and to provide each student with exercises matching his level of mastery. The usually limited human resources, however, prohibit giving training to small groups. An adaptive computer-based training program for electronics engineering education, which can provide a solution for this dilemma, is described.

We describe the design of a Task Planning and World Modelling mechanism as part of a Supervisory or Tele-assistance control scheme for robots operating in unstructured environments. The mechanism addresses the key difficulties of an unstructured environment which lead to failures in task execution. Reactivity is achieved by mixing planning and execution. Complexity of task and error recovery is managed by hierarchical design of action sequences. The World Model and Task Planner are intimately linked to allow parameterization of actions, and for the operator to focus on involved objects in the world. They work as part of a functional architecture with Motion Planning, Dynamic control and Sensor Fusion processes, and have been implemented to specify the activity of a pair of underwater manipulators, sensed using force/torque loadcell, joint potentiometers, high frequency sonar and laser striping.

A new mechatronic on-line yarn stability tester for air-jet texturing is reported. Currently, stability testing takes place by carrying out destructive testing of the yarn off-line in the laboratory. This causes considerable delay between obtaining the results and correcting the production, which can prove to be very costly to the manufacturer. The new stability tester would monitor both the tension between two delivery rollers following the texturing jet and the difference in speeds of the rollers. By continuously measuring the yarn tension and percentage elongation of the yarn, a measure of the stability of the textured yarn structure can be obtained. This would then be used to control the actuator which adjusts the pressure of the air supplied to the texturing jet, thereby closing the control loop.

This work is carried out with the aim of developing a digital data transfer technique between a PC and PLC to provide for the development and testing of multi-actuator fluid power simulation models. Several methods of encoding/decoding techniques have been developed and tested using simulation modeling. At relatively low cost, substantial improvements in the development and testing of PLC control and monitoring software have been achieved which extend to the simulation of authentic industrial fluid power systems.

A structured approach to computer-based learning storyboard design, based on frame classification, is presented. The approach promotes the incorporation of interaction and as a result, the storyboard evolves from an information-centered initial definition to a learning-centered specification for final realization. A number of highly-interactive models, which help in producing a learning experience that students will find motivational, are produced.

This paper describes work done at the University of Strathclyde, creating both educational documents within the World Wide Web, and further, for integrating pedagogically neutral simulations of engineering phenomena within the hypermedia environment which the World Wide Web provides. The facilities and tools for building the simulation applications, and for embedding them within the WWW are via Project INTERACT, and were built at the three sites involved in the project, University of Cambridge, Heriot Watt University, and University of Strathclyde.

The Electronic Design education Consortium (EDEC) is dedicated to the production of computer-based teaching and learning material to support the education of electronic engineers and computer scientists. Eight universities are collaborating in the production of the courseware which has been grouped into four major theme areas, namely, Electronic Circuit Design, Digital Design, System and High Level Design and Testing and Design for Test. The Institution of Electrical Engineers is also a member of the Consortium. Over the three year duration of the project it is hoped to develop 160 hours of courseware which will be, where ever possible, closely integrated with the industry-standard electronic CAD software available under the ECAD and EUROCHIP initiatives.

In computer-based laboratory tutorials, students are guided step-by-step through the laboratory script. Relevant device parameters are extracted from data and calculations are performed using these typical figures. Work is focused on the task at hand and there is little side-tracking into theory. Where appropriate, reference is made to the recommended text and, for one tutorial, the relevant chapter is actually available on line. The advantages of computer-based tutorial over the printed page are presented. These computer-based tutorials are proving to be very successful in encouraging students to prepare for practical laboratory work.

The promises offered to students by quality computer-based learning (CBL) are becoming well known. The potential efficiency savings in academic preparation and delivery times have been uppermost in the drive to develop CBL materials. Oxford Brookes University is a member of the Electronic Design education Consortium (EDEC). EDEC receives funding from the Higher education Funding Council through the Teaching and Learning Technology Programme to generate CBL courseware for undergraduate teaching of electronics. Examples of the CBL material authored by the Oxford Brookes EDEC team are described and issues relating to the development time are discussed before a review of experiences using this courseware in teaching final year electronics is made.
