Vehicle electronic systems are subject to a series of vibration environments, manufacture, shipment and operation. The first of these does not cause any problems but should not be ignored, the second is normally controlled by suitable protective packaging, such as a plastic foam. When the protective packaging is removed, the system lives in the operating environment and is subjected to three primary disturbances: sinusoidal vibration, random vibration, and mechanical shock. The different considerations in the vibration design and testing of vehicle electronic systems are discussed.

User involvement in the design process is generally recognised to be necessary and will lead to 'better' systems. However, there are several problems associated with this approach, particularly in the development of a number of information systems. This paper addresses some of the problems encountered, and presents a technique, the use of a Future Workshop that supports early user involvement and can be used successfully with existing design approaches.

Providing tactile feedback could help solve the problem of too much information being on display and the driver taking his eyes off the road for too long. Audio feedback complements the tactile feedback from switches and also helps the driver to keep his eyes on the road. The concept of cognitive artefact is described in the context of a prototype system that supports the conceptual design of mechanical fasteners. The approach taken to the prototype is to reproduce the qualities of free hand sketching, but include techniques which enrich the information content of the representations. The aim is to provide representations that on the one hand are responsive and meaningful, and on the other contain sufficient information to allow engineers to make formal assessment on the value of a proposed design.

The concepts of place invariants and structural conflicts are applied to the design of Petri net controllers. The use of structural conflicts simplifies the synthesis procedure when dealing with forbidden states involving firing vectors, and the resulting controller is simpler compared with those obtained based on place invariants alone. Moreover, the method can be applied to any Petri net without the restriction of safety, which significantly extends the application domain.
