The impact of the resulting increase in information regarding driver performance must be carefully monitored in order to ensure that the influx of integrated driver support systems will be beneficial in terms of traffic safety and driving performance. The continued and increasing usage of the generic evaluation method (GEM) by the automotive industry will result in the improved design of driver support system interfaces and should provide a basis for further standardization and validation of evaluation methods. A database of reference values and comparable evaluation results will permit confidentiality of design details which should encourage cooperation among researchers and the automotive industry.

This paper is concerned with multivariable controller synthesis for a multiburner furnace design commonly seen in industry. A nonlinear multivariate controller design method based on sliding mode theory is explained and demonstrated for such furnaces. This framework can be used for temperature and oxygen concentration regulation simultaneously. The disturbance rejection and tracking possibilities of the controller makes it a good candidate for implementation on a real furnace.

This paper compares the results of four robust multivariable design techniques applied to the depth control of a nonlinear Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) subjected to parameter perturbations. Three nonlinear control techniques, namely, input-output(i/o) linearization control, input-output linearization control with sliding mode control and input-output linearization control with adaptive fuzzy control are studied. The fourth technique is the H∞ loop shaping design procedure using multiobjective optimization for the simultaneous design of robust stability and performance.

Simulations of fuzzy logic and neural network based control algorithms show some useful insights into the potential of soft computing in the control regime of electrical motor servos and drives. Results show that soft computing offers robustness to a conventional PI controller, and can overcome positional steady state error due to the system's nonlinearities. design procedures are more straightforward as stringent mathematical models and analysis are usually not involved. The UK Department of Transport is aware that drivers should not be distracted from the primary task of safe vehicle control while using in-vehicle systems such as navigation and communication aids. It therefore asked ICE Ergonomics to develop a Code of Practice for the design installation and use of driver information systems. The code was developed by a working group of experts and researchers from the industry and research community. The first section of the code contains the objectives to be achieved and the second is a set of design Guidelines to help systemsdesigners, manufacturer installer and users achieve the objectives set out in the code. The guidelines summarize current ergonomics knowledge and provide sources for further information.

In particular, this article investigates the applicability of CBR to the estimation of refurbishment costs and shows that whilst CBR is effective, it is not entirely without pain.
