The MATLAB and SIMULINK packages were applied to the design and analysis of a discrete-time lateral autopilot for a general tactical missile. The performance of the final design was assessed by examining the closed loop step response. Open loop margin and phase margin were used as indicators of robustness. The design achieved a settling time of at most 0.3 s with no more than 20% overshoot.

System development is an iterative process encompassing the many decisions which need to be made in order to reach the design of the `final product.' One way to ensure that the requirements of the user population are eventually met in the final product is to work with the users throughout the life cycle. Conversely, the highest risk approach occurs when a commodity is produced based on a design which has had no input from the intended users. The benefits of user participation are greatest at the start of the design process decreasing as the product moves through the various life cycle stages.

This paper looks at using artefacts to support a prototype Soft systems Analysis tool based upon the work of Checkland (1981). This methodology is concerned with systems definition and relies heavily on people-people interaction. Information on a software package developed for use by students in a first course in controlsystems are presented. The flexibility provided by the package is found satisfactory for many industrial applications. Many users of control engineering software are not using the software continuously and therefore any approaches which make the software easier to use are particularly useful. Additional packages are developed to study such topics as simple aspects of nonlinear control, model reduction and PID controller design.

The development of a driver interface for autonomous intelligent cruise control (AICC) was among the areas studied by the PROMETHEUS research program. Two interface configurations were implemented and tested: one uses six steering wheel switches with flexible format display and the other has three steering wheel switches for driver controls, increment set speed, decrement set speed and cruise/cancel. The driver interface for cruise control was not found to be the most appropriate model on which to base an interface for AICC. AICC systems should be designed in such a way that it reflects the way drivers will use the system and the way drivers actually control their vehicles.

The development of the FOX environmental control system is described and some of the benefits of the adopted design approach are outlined. Since its launching in September of 1994, over 200 systems have been installed. Reports from users and carers about FOX have been highly complimentary. Specific benefits noted include the reliability of the system, the efficiency and kindness of technical support staff, the ease of control and training, the ability to operate at long range, the improved clarity of the communication and phone system, the provision of the family override, the new door opening feature and the comprehensive control of entertainment systems.
