A system configuration is a set of configuration entities, their relations and the rules the system should obey. At runtime the configuration may be modified to meet new requirements, in response to performance degradations, or due to upgrade. Such modifications should maintain the consistency of the configuration to avoid any malfunction and service outage. thus there is a need for runtime validation, which checks the modifications against the consistency rules of the system. this runtime validation should not only check the correctness of the modifications w.r.t. the consistency rules but it should also impose a minimal overhead especially in case of real-time and highly available systems. In this paper we introduce a partial validation approach for checking the system configuration consistency at runtime. Our approach is model based and uses UML profiles and OCL constraints.

State-based real-time scheduling analyses offer a high accuracy especially for chains of functions. In this work we extend our state-based approach to also support complex activation behavior of the functions. Additionally, we use standard modeling techniques and well defined formalisms to foster the applicability and usability of our scheduling analysis. In our approach we use MARTE to model the underlying architecture of a system consisting of embedded control units and bus systems. For timing requirements we use the requirement specification language RSL. In order to model complex activation patterns and internal states, we use an extended task network formalism called function networks. Our approach is evaluated with an industrial driver assistance system case study.

A task mapping is deemed feasible for a hard real-time embedded system if the end-to-end response times of all tasks, which include the computation and the communication delays, does not exceed their deadlines. In this paper, we propose a new fitness function based on the concept of breakdown frequency to address the task mapping optimisation problem of hard real-time embedded systems. As a property of task mapping, the breakdown frequency is the minimal operating frequency under which a task set and its messages are able to execute in any scenario without missing their deadlines. With the frequency, unschedulable tasks and messages can become schedulable without changing the task mapping itself. these advantages are difficult to find in the state-of-the-art optimisation techniques that use the number of unschedulable tasks or latency as the property of task mapping. Results from the case studies suggest that the proposed function enables a wider design space exploration, allowing designers to easily trade-off operating frequency and core count without sacrificing hard real-time schedulability.

this paper presents an extensible and adaptable platform for distributed applications with mixed criticality based on using state of the art FPGA technology. Although capable of executing programs written in different languages, the platform specifically targets the execution of programs written in Globally Asynchronous Locally Synchronous language SystemJ used in the context of Internet of Industrial things. the key properties of the prototype platform are accommodation of mixed-criticality processing as well as provision of Internet addressable services. Mixed -criticality execution platform (MCEP) uses multiple processor cores and network interfaces: (1) a dual-core ARM processor with Ethernet for Internet access and processing of non-real time application parts and (2) TP-JOP reactive hard real-time processor with customized Controller Area Network (CAN) for real-time and time -critical response processing. this platform has been successfully developed and used in an industrial automation system within the Internet of Industrial things context.

this paper deals with the design and evaluation of a reliable middleware for multiple Mixed-Core Sytem-on-Chips. the middleware should thereby be responsible for the distribution of tasks among the processing elements. Additional to the requirement of a decentralized task allocation, the middleware should also use self-x principles of Organic computing, like self-optimization or self-healing. therefore, the here presented model utilizes another middleware, the artificial hormone system. Furthermore, the model introduces a cluster structure among the multiple Mixed-Core System-on-Chips. Among those clusters the set of tasks will be distributed and each cluster runs its own artificial hormone system with its subset of tasks. For distributing the tasks, the middleware uses a negotiation system, widely used by Multi-Agent-Systems. this hierarchical two-level concept brings also benefits when using it with a single Mixed-Core System-on-Chip. these benefits and the limitations of the system will be explained in this thesis. Also the results of the evaluation of the self-configuration and self-healing properties will be presented and discussed.

At the workshop, we see the results of some of the foremost researchers for technology that is aimed not at replacing workers, but augmenting knowledge workers, striving to avoid the urge to automate, but instead to facilitate. the focus is more on goals that behave like objectives, not defining the work, but instead inspiring the worker to figure out the best course given that particular unique set of context conditions. Just as the Global Peter Drucker Forum, in the fall of 2013 took the subject of complexity in management, papers in this workshop try to measure complexity and to either reduce or simply cope with complexity, without yielding to complete chaos. Our challenge is to leverage the intelligence of the worker, in guiding their own course, while at the same time helping those workers avoid the risks of violating rules and regulations, using techniques for process mining and dashboards to inform workers of their status. these are taken from real world requirements, in real use cases.

In this paper, we describe the possibilities of the parallelization of the genetic algorithm for road traffic network division for a distributed/parallel computing environment. this genetic algorithm, which we developed, is utilized for division of road traffic networks for distributed road traffic simulation. the parallelization of the genetic algorithm is not based on the commonly used island model. Instead, the particular steps of the genetic algorithm are performed concurrently. the analysis of the inter-process communication of the described distributed/ parallel genetic algorithm in dependency on the number of working threads and/or working processes is also part of the paper. the parallelization is utilizable also in different problem domains.

In the Logical Execution time (LET) programming model, fixed execution times of software tasks are specified and a dedicated middleware is employed to ensure their realization, achieving increased system robustness and predictability. this paradigm has been proposed as a top-down development process, which is hardly applicable to a large body of legacy control software encountered in the embedded industry. Applying LET to legacy software entails challenges such as: satisfying legacy constraints, minimizing additional computational costs, maintaining control quality, and dealing with event-triggered computations. Such challenges are addressed here by a systematic approach, where program analysis and modification techniques are employed to introduce efficient buffering into the legacy system such that the given LET specifications are met. the approach has been implemented in a tool suite that performs fully automated transformation of the legacy software and may be carried out incrementally. this paper presents an application to large-scale automotive embedded software, as well as an evaluation of the achieved LET-based behavior for industrial engine control software.

the real-time system design targeting multiprocessor platforms leads to two important complications in realtime scheduling. First, to ensure deterministic processing by communicating tasks the scheduling has to consider precedence constraints. the second complication factor is mixed criticality, i.e., integration upon a single platform of various subsystems where some are safety-critical (e.g., car braking system) and the others are not (e.g., car digital radio). therefore we motivate and study the multiprocessor scheduling problem of a finite set of precedence -related mixed criticality jobs. this problem, to our knowledge, has never been studied if not under very specific assumptions. the main contribution of our work is an algorithm that, given a global fixed -priority assignment for jobs, can modify it in order to improve its schedulability for mixed -criticality setting. Our experiments show an increase of schedulable instances up to a maximum of 30% if compared to classical solutions for this category of scheduling problems.

Fault-tolerant distributed embedded systems have to react properly on the occurrence of faults in order to avoid harm to the system or its environment. Faulty system resources have to be isolated from the remaining system. Hence, these resources become unavailable, leading to a decreasing number of available resources and input data. In such cases, mechanisms like graceful degradation may be applied to ensure that the system does not turn off completely, but degrades its provided set of functional features gracefully. It must be ensured that the remaining intact resources are efficiently used to execute at least those features, which are required to behave fail -operational. In this paper, we investigate deployments of mixed -critical software components to a fault -tolerant system platform. We introduce a formal model of software components and their publish/subscribe based communication channels. We use this model to analyze the graceful degradation of the system in different scenarios of failing execution hardware. this includes also the explicit deactivation of software components due to unavailable required input data. Our analysis is based on using an SMT solver and contributes to guarantee that all requirements with respect to fail-operationality are met by the system design. the approach is evaluated by an example and a scalability analysis.
