General matrix multiply (GEMM) is an important operation in broad applications, especially the thriving deep neural networks. To achieve low power consumption for GEMM, researchers have already leveraged unary computing, which manipulates bitstreams with extremely simple logic. However, existing unary architectures are not well generalizable to varying GEMM configurations in versatile applications and incompatible to the binary computing stack, imposing challenges to execute unary GEMM effortlessly. In this work, we address the problem by architecting a hybrid unary-binary systolic array, uSystolic, to inherit the legacy-binary data scheduling with slow (thus power-efficient) data movement, i.e., data bytes are crawling out from memory to drive uSystolic. uSystolic exhibits tremendous area and power improvements as a joint effect of 1) low-power computing kernel, 2) spatial-temporal bitstream reuse, and 3) on-chip SRAM elimination. For the evaluated edge computing scenario, compared with the binary parallel design, the rated-coded uSystolic reduces the systolic array area and total on-chip area by 59.0% and 91.3%, with the on-chip energy and power efficiency improved by up to 112.2x and 44.8x for AlexNet.

the profound impact of recent developments in artificial intelligence is unquestionable. the applications of deep learning models are everywhere, from advanced natural language processing to highly accurate prediction of extreme weather. those models have been continuously increasing in complexity, becoming much more powerful than their original versions. In addition, data to train the models is becoming more available as technological infrastructures sense and collect more readings. Consequently, distributed deep learning training is often times necessary to handle intricate models and massive datasets. Running a distributed training strategy on a supercomputer exposes the models to all the considerations of a large-scale machine;reliability is one of them. As supercomputers integrate a colossal number of components, each fabricated on an ever decreasing feature-size, faults are common during execution of programs. A particular type of fault, silent data corruption, is troublesome because the system does not crash and does not immediately give an evident sign of an error. We set out to explore the effects of that type of faults by inspecting how distributed deep learning training strategies cope with bit-flips that affect their internal data structures. We used checkpoint alteration, a technique that permits the study of this phenomenon on different distributed training platforms and with different deep learning frameworks. We evaluated two distributed learning libraries (Distributed Data Parallel and Horovod) and found out Horovod is slightly more resilient to SDCs. However, fault propagation is similar in both cases, and the model is more sensitive to SDCs than the optimizer.

Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) is starting to become the norm as more and more smart devices and sensors are installed in people's homes. this is an important aspect in improving the quality of life, especially for the elderly and for people with disabilities. the solution presented in this paper approaches this paradigm in a large scale deployment context, as it proposes an AAL architecture on three layers (Edge, Dew, and Cloud), which is capable of handling high amount of sensor data in near real-time. Using a distributed system of rules engines, the system is able to take actions based on the acquired data. An important novel concept is the"new home deployment", which facilitates the integration of the devices from a new installation site - the software setup of the new edge infrastructure is done by using a dedicated Cloud service. In order to showcase the practicality and efficiency of the architecture, this paper presents the intricacies of the employed services and service-interaction when deploying the solution on the OpenStack Cloud platform. © 2023 ieee.

Edge servers have recently become very popular for performing localized analytics, especially on video, as they reduce data traffic and protect privacy. However, due to their resource constraints, these servers often employ compressed models, which are typically prone to data drift. Consequently, for edge servers to provide cloud-comparable quality, they must also perform continuous learning to mitigate this drift. However, at expected deployment scales, performing continuous training on every edge server is not sustainable due to their aggregate power demands on grid supply and associated sustainability footprints. To address these challenges, we propose ***, an approach combining algorithmic adjustments, hardware-software co-design, and morphable acceleration hardware to enable the training of workloads on these edge servers to be powered by renewable, but intermittent, solar power that can sustainably scale alongside data sources. Our evaluation of *** on a real-world traffic dataset indicates that our continuous learning approach simultaneously improves both accuracy and efficiency: *** offers a 4.96% greater mean accuracy than prior approaches while our morphable accelerator that adapts to solar variance can save up to {234.95kWH, 2.63MWH}/year/edge-server compared to a {DNN accelerator, data center scale GPU}, respectively. © 2024 ieee.

Cloud providers can rent their spare computing capacity at substantial discounts, reclaiming it whenever there is a more profitable higher-priority request - a business model well known as spot infrastructure market. Users can attain significant cloud investment savings using spot machines, however with the caveat of increasing software complexity, given the fault tolerance requirements of this environment. Improvements in virtualization and network technology, combined with the development of key new software tools, may allow the HPC community to effectively take advantage of cheap cloud resources, cutting expensive maintenance costs. this study aims to evaluate the viability of budget-constrained cloud environments for tightly-coupled MPI applications, exploring both spot and traditional low-budget infrastructures from real public cloud platforms. We propose and evaluate two different fault tolerance strategies tailored for unreliable spot cloud environments: system-level rollback restart with Berkeley Labs Checkpoint/Restart (BLCR) and in-memory rollback restart with User-Level Failure Mitigation (ULFM). We also propose a provider-agnostic empirical method for testing and predicting MPI workloads execution times and cloud infrastructure costs. A detailed cost analysis and performance benchmark of a case-study application is provided, with data gathered from experiments with both spot and persistent machines from AWS and Vultr Cloud, respectively. Our results show that: (i) adequate cluster sizing plays an important role in the overall job execution performance and cost-effectiveness, regardless of the type of selected instances;(ii) fault tolerance strategies based on BLCR may have worse performance than ULFM, but still be cost-effective considering software migration costs;(iii) the use of spot infrastructure does not guarantee costs savings depending on the chosen machine flavors and discounts, as experiments with persistent low-budget options attained better c

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have been successfully applied to a great variety of applications, ranging from small IoT devices to large scale services in a data center. In order to improve the efficiency of processing these DNN models, dedicated hardware accelerators are required for all these scenarios. theoretically, there exists an optimized acceleration architecture for each application. However, considering the cost of chip design and corresponding tool-chain development, researchers need to trade off between efficiency and generality. In this work, we demonstrate that it is practical to use a unified architecture, called Ascend, to support those applications, ranging from IoT devices to data-center services. We provide a lot of design details to explain that the success of Ascend relies on contributions from different levels. First, heterogeneous computing units are employed to support various DNN models. And the datapath is adapted according to the requirement of computing and data access. Second, when scaling the Ascend architecture from a single core to a cluster containing thousands of cores, it involves design efforts, such as memory hierarchy and system level integration. third, a multi-tier compiler, which provides flexible choices for developers, is the last critical piece. Experimental results show that using accelerators based on the Ascend architecture can achieve comparable or even better performance in different applications. In addition, various chips based on the Ascend architecture have been successfully commercialized. More than 100 million chips have been used in real products.

Convex optimization is at the heart of many performance-critical applications across a wide range of domains. Although many high-performance hardware accelerators have been developed for specific optimization problems in the past, designing such accelerator is a challenging task and the resulting computing architecture is often so specific to the targeted application that they can hardly be reused even in a related application within the same domain. To accelerate general-purpose optimization solvers that must operate on diverse user input during run time, an ideal hardware solver should be able to adapt to the provided optimization problem dynamically while achieving high performance and power-efficiency. In this work, a hardware-accelerated general-purpose quadratic program solver, called RSQP, with reconfigurable functional units and data path that facilitate problem-specific customization is presented. RSQP uses a string-based encoding to describe the problem structure with fine granularity. Based on this encoding, functional units and datapath customized to the sparsity pattern of the problem are created by solving a dictionary-based lossless string compression problem and a mixed integer linear program respectively. RSQP has been integrated to accelerate the general-purpose quadratic programming solver OSQP and has been tested using an extensive benchmark with 120 optimization problems from 6 application domains. through architectural customization, RSQP achieves up to 7x performance improvement over its baseline generic design. Furthermore, when compared with a CPU and a GPU-accelerated implementation, RSQP achieves up to 31.2x and 6.9x end-to-end speedup on these benchmark programs, respectively. Finally, the FPGA accelerator operates at up to 6.6x lower dynamic power consumption and up to 22.7x higher power efficiency over the GPU implementation, making it an attractive solution for power-conscious datacenter applications.

Traffic management centres worldwide are facing unprecedented challenges from traffic incidents, impacting congestion, delays, pollution, and costs. Congested roads during peak hours are prone to accidents, causing significant disruptions and delays. Non-recurrent congestion such as accidents, occur unexpectedly and are major contributors to delays while disruptions in public transportation lead to increased demand for alternative modes thereby causing severe congestion. Understanding the impact of these incidents on multi-modal traffic networks is crucial for developing effective response plans. this study addresses the limitations of using only historical data to run simulations in advance. the proposed architecture enables optimized simulations with real-time inputs and accurate parameter prediction for improved response planning. this work provides a foundational proof of concept for utilizing minimal real-time data for accurate simulations of dynamic traffic behaviours through a Singapore case study. Future research can focus on comparative analysis methods, optimization strategies, and incorporating pedestrian effects. these advancements will aid transport authorities in making informed decisions for infrastructure and route planning. © 2023 ieee.

Providing a high-quality performance prediction has the potential to enhance various aspects of a cluster, such as devising scheduling and provisioning policies, guiding procurement decisions, suggesting candidate applications for tuning, and identifying probable scaling and porting challenges. Creating such a prediction for the I/O metrics is still challenging, however, due to the intricate interplay of multiple cluster components, making this an ideal case for machine learning. Nevertheless, achieving the required accuracy level with machine learning calls for a substantial amount of high-quality data, which is often a difficult challenge for most HPC clusters. In this work we explore the use of transfer learning to predict the applications' I/O bandwidth based on a public dataset. As a result, our experiment can provide an I/O bandwidth prediction for a different cluster comparable to the current state-of-the-art result while employing 100 times less data than needed to construct the base model. Furthermore, we evaluate potential future improvements of the proposed workflow. © 2024 ieee.

Evaluating the performance of an antenna using commercially available electromagnetic (EM) solvers such as computer simulation technology (CST) studio suite has become crucial. In this context, a unidirectional advanced technique is used for simulating a Printed Log-Periodic Antenna (PLPDA) enclosed in a fixture with foam. this method employs a hybrid solver approach, in which the PLPDA with foam (source) is simulated using a transient solver, and the fixture (platform) is simulated using an integral equation solver. the proposed technique significantly reduces the simulation time and RAM usage while maintaining high accuracy. It is a viable alternative to traditional full-wave analysis, where the source and platform are simulated using a single solver or bidirectional simulation techniques. A comparative analysis with measured radiation patterns demonstrates the effectiveness of this method, providing a reliable and efficient solution for antenna design and performance evaluation. © 2024 ieee.
