Microchannel liquid cooling has been proposed since the late 2000s as a viable enabler for 3D integration of microprocessors to continue scaling of computing power in the face of increasingly reduced returns from CMOS technology scaling. thermal and electrical demonstrations of microchannel liquid-cooled heat sinks on the back side of IC dies exist in the literature and the compatibility of its fabrication with the existing CMOS process has been shown. this compatibility also gives rise to the prospect of building of nearly an infinite variety of channel networks with no additional manufacturing cost. this ICCAD 2015 problem aims to identify methods to optimize such microchannel fluid networks, and to evaluate impact of different cooling networks on different computing architectures floorplans.

this paper presents an analytically tractable stochastic geometry model for urban wireless networks, where the locations of the nodes and the shadowing are highly correlated and different path loss functions can be applied to line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) links. Using a distance-based LOS path loss model and a blockage (shadowing)-based NLOS path loss model, we are able to derive the distribution of the interference observed at a typical location and the joint distribution at different locations. When applied to cellular networks, this model leads to tractable expressions for the coverage probability (SINR distribution). We show that this model captures important features of urban wireless networks, which cannot be analyzed using existing models. the numerical results also suggest that even in the presence of significant penetration loss, ignoring the NLOS interference can lead to erroneous estimations on coverage. they also suggest that allowing users to be associated with NLOS BSs may provide a non-trivial gain on coverage.

Vulnerability amplification is an ever increasing problem in homogeneous large scale networks that operate many instances of the same operating system. Diversification of a process image through techniques such as Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) is a commonly used defense against vulnerability amplification. One approach to diversification of a process image is load-time diversity. this paper presents a Kernel Procedure Linkage Table (KPLT) that allows for a unique diversified kernel layout on a per process basis.

Latency-sensitive applications (e.g., wireless gaming and TV remote play) are increasingly popular in home WiFi networks. Such millisecond-level latency requirements call for new fine-grained approaches at the link layer. In this paper, we show that current solutions work well for throughput but not for latency due to the long tail of the packet delay distribution. We thus propose LLRA, a new latency-aware rate adaptation scheme that reduces the tail latency for delay-sensitive applications. LLRA takes concerted design in rate control, frame aggregation scheduling and software/hardware retransmission dispatching. Our implementation and evaluation confirm the viability of LLRA in 802.11n home networks.

After several years of ignorance in practice, Network Coding (NC) is gaining more and more attention in wireless networks. On the other hand, performing complex in-network operations requires extra hardware, which is still a real barrier of a widespread deployment of network coding in transport networks. However, recent technological trends, such as Network Function Virtualization, enable the deployment of network coding capable middleboxes at network nodes without complicated hardware-update, while Software-defined Networking (SDN) makes it possible to steer traffic to these middleboxes. Furthermore, a practical networking scenario was recently identified - namely the single link failure resilient case when user data can be split into two parts - for which simple coding operation at the edge nodes is sufficient to reach all benefits that network coding can provide. Built on these results, we demonstrate in the GEANT OpenFlow Facility that network coding can be easily deployed in transport networks and brings real benefits for video streaming and distributed storage use cases.

In this paper, we investigate optimal management of local energy trading in future smart micro-grid (SMG) via pricing. In SMG, energy consumers and providers, in addition to trading with utility company, can also perform local energy trading controlled by a local trading manager (LTM) for reaping benefits. We first quantify the benefits achieved by the consumers and providers from local trading and then formulate a two-layered optimization framework to investigate i) how the energy consumers and providers maximize their benefits via appropriately adjusting their local trading decisions in response to the LTM's pricing, and ii) how the LTM adjusts its price in local market to benefit the consumers and providers as much as possible while guaranteeing a required gain for itself. We propose two algorithms to solve the layered optimization problem and perform numerical experiments with practical data set to validate the proposed local trading model and the algorithms.

Mobile applications are dominant in today's cellular networks (Mobile Internet), which demand frequent and intensive mobile data access services. Popular applications like instant message and social network apps require a long-lived connection to the backend server which periodically sends small "keep-alive" messages to maintain the connected app session. Existing research has revealed that the keep-alive messages degrade the quality of experience (QoE) for both the client-user and the service provider in cellular network (e.g., to reduce the battery life for users' phones, and to increase the cost of signaling and the channel overhead for service providers). In this paper, we present MobileQoE, a framework that improves the QoE of mobile data access in cellular networks. Specifically, MobileQoE consists of three components: (1) a unified definition of the radio resource cost of the keep-alive message;(2) a measurement approach for observing the cost of cellular radio resources consumed by keep-alive messages;(3) and a developed MobileQoE Software Development Kit (SDK) for android smartphones which can coordinate with different long-lived connections to reduce the total radio resource.

this paper presents an analytic characterization of a random access strategy in low data-rate networking with the provision for service differentiation. Its utility lies in the context of certain emerging network types, such as those enabling smart homes and buildings, where a set of conflicting requirements makes efficient medium access control (MAC) a challenging task. A substantive portion of the traffic from the associated applications are event-driven, which necessitates random access, while the number of sensing and actuator nodes comprising the networks can be fairly large. this challenge to provide scalable random access exacerbate further by the need to facilitate service differentiation for the higher priority critical traffic. In this context, an analysis of near-optimal channel access efficiency is laid out keeping level of service differentiation flexible with consideration of a carrier sense multiple access based MAC scheme used in low data-rate networking. Numerical results with extensive simulations that correspond to quantitative analyses are produced.

A framework that aims to best utilize the mobile network resources for video applications is presented in this paper. the main contribution of the work proposed is the QoE-driven optimization method that can maintain a desired trade-off between fairness and efficiency in allocating resources in terms of data rates to video streaming users in LTE networks. this method is concerned with the control of the user satisfaction level from the service continuity's point of view and applies appropriate QoE metrics (Pause Intensity and variations) to determine the scheduling strategies in combination with the mechanisms used for adaptive video streaming such as 3GP/MPEG-DASH. the superiority of the proposed algorithms are demonstrated, showing how the resources of a mobile network can be optimally utilized by using quantifiable QoE measurements. this approach can also find the best match between demand and supply in the process of network resource distribution.

the mobility model in urban vehicular networks is one of the most important factors that impacts the evaluation of any vehicular networking protocols via simulations. However, to obtain a realistic mobility model in the dynamic urban environment is very challenging. Recently, several studies extract mobility models from large-scale real data sets (mostly taxi GPS data) without consideration of the statuses of taxi. In this paper, we discover two simple observations related to the taxi status via mining of real taxi traces: (1) the behavior of taxi will be influenced by the statuses, and (2) the macroscopic movement is related with different geographic features in corresponding status. Based on these two observations, a novel taxi mobility model (START) is proposed with respect to taxi status and geographic region. the simulation results illustrate that proposed mobility model has a good approximation with reality in trace samples, distribution of nodes and the contact characteristics.
