Ultrasonic motor has nonlinear characteristics, which vary with driving conditions and possess variable dead-zone in the control input that is associated with the applied load torque. the dead-zone has a problem in accurate positioning actuator. To improve the control performance of the ultrasonic motor the dead-zone nonlinearity should be eliminated. this paper proposes a new position control scheme for the ultrasonic motors, that eliminates the problem due to dead-zone by employing fuzzy neural network (FNN). To achieve accurate position control when drive conditions vary, FNN adjust the membership function for antecedent part. the training of FNN is achieved using online backpropagation algorithm. the dead-zone is compensated by FNN, and PI controller performs accurate positioning of the drive system. the validity of the proposed method is confirmed by experimental results.

A unified behavioral model based on the flyback transformer, including its leakage inductance, is presented in this paper. the proposed switched transformer model is applicable to simulate topology-independent converters under both continuous (CCM) and discontinuous (DCM) conduction modes. the model can be used in modeling more complicated converter topologies with nonidealities, such as leakage inductance and snubber networks. Simulation results using the proposed model show the over-looked effect of the transformer leakage inductance on the high frequency transfer function response of the flyback converter. the time domain simulation results show a good accuracy and significant reduction in the simulation time.

In the dynamic load balancing problem, we seek to keep the job load roughly evenly distributed among the processors of a given network. the arrival and departure of jobs is modeled by an adversary restricted in its power. Muthukrishnan and Rajaraman (1998) gave a clean characterization of a restriction on the adversary that can be considered the natural analogue of a cut condition. they proved that a simple local balancing algorithm proposed by Aiello et. al (1993) is stable against such an adversary if the insertion rate is restricted to a (1 - Ε) fraction of the cut size. they left as an open question whether the algorithm is stable at rate 1. In this paper, we resolve this question positively, by proving stability of the local algorithm at rate 1. Our proof techniques are very different from the ones used by Muthukrishnan and Rajaraman, and yield a simpler proof and tighter bounds on the difference in loads. In addition, we introduce a multi-commodity version of this load balancing model, and show how to extend the result to the case of balancing two different kinds of loads at once (obtaining as a corollary a new proof of the 2-commodity Max-Flow Min-Cut theorem). We also show how to apply the proof techniques to the problem of routing packets in adversarial systems. Awerbuch et. al. (2001) showed that the same load balancing algorithm is stable against an adversary inserting packets at rate 1 with a single destination, in dynamically changing networks. Our techniques give a much simpler proof for a different model of adversarially changing networks.

HiperLAN (High PErformance Radio local Area Network) Type 2 is a new standard from ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) for high-speed wireless LANs, interconnecting portable devices to broadband core networks based on different networking technologies such as IP, ATM, UMTS, and others. this paper carries out a performance evaluation of the MAC protocol operating within a HiperLAN/2 system. Specifically, the paper focuses on the mechanisms provided by HiperLAN/2 to manage bandwidth resource request/granting and scheduling, in order to assess their flexibility and efficiency in supporting delay sensitive (voice) and computer data traffic of a bursty nature (Web traffic).

the paper focuses on two emerging technologies for constructing a Mobile ad hoc network: ieee 802.11 and Bluetooth. the ieee 802.11 standard is a good platform to implement a single-hop ad hoc network because of its extreme simplicity. Furthermore, multi-hop networks covering areas of several square kilometres could be built by exploiting the ieee 802.11 technology. On smaller scales, technologies like Bluetooth can be exploited (perhaps in combination with the 802.11-type technology) to build ad-hoc wireless Personal Area networks, i.e. networks that connect devices placed inside a circle with radius of 10 meters. the paper presents with a tutorial style the architectures and protocols of ieee 802.11 and Bluetooth. In addition, a discussion on the performance of these two technologies is presented. Specifically, we focus on the Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol adopted by the two technologies and we analyze both the protocol efficiency (channel utilization) and the response time.

A beamformer-RAKE receiver (see Naguib, A.F., "Adaptive Antennas for CDMA Wireless networks", Ph.D. dissertation, Stanford University, 1996) takes advantage of both the spatial and temporal processing associated with a beamformer and a RAKE receiver respectively. We investigate the performance of a beamformer-RAKE receiver at the uplink of the wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) system. the receiver exploits the maximum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (MSINR) criterion (see Litva, J. and Lo, T.K., "Digital Beamforming in Wireless Communications", Artech House, Boston, 1996) to form the beams in the spatial domain. the blind code gated algorithm (CGA) (see Vasavada, Y.M. et al., Proc. 34th Asilomar Conf. on Signals, Systems and computers, 2000) is employed to realize the MSINR criterion. We compare the CGA with the modified code filtering approach (CFA) (see Kwon, S. et al., Proc. ieee Vehicular Tech. Conf., p.1890-4, 1999 ). the performance gain of a beamformer-RAKE compared to a conventional RAKE receiver is demonstrated.

the Smart Wireless LAN (SWL) system integrates a smart antenna system with the ieee 802.11 wireless LAN (WLAN) standard to enable multiple WLAN users to transmit simultaneously in frequency band. Dynamic slot algorithms are used by SWL to improve transmission quality and maximize capacity by selecting users for rime slots based on their unique spatial signatures. this paper presents an improved beamforming technique and an upgraded computer simulation that has significantly upgraded the SWL dynamic slot algorithms. the simulation results, showing the advantages and disadvantages of the various algorithms studied, are presented and analyzed. the improved beamforming algorithm (MSINR) is also presented and evaluated.
