We consider the problem of estimating the time-varying root of a time-dependent nonlinear map. We introduce a "dynamic inverse" of a map, another generally time-dependent map which composes with the original map to form a nonlinear vector-field. the flow of this vector field decays exponentially to the root. We then show how a dynamic inverse may be determined dynamically while being used simultaneously to find a root. We construct a continuous-time analog computational paradigm around the dynamic inverse.

this paper presents a hierarchical model reference adaptive control algorithm for a class of complex nonlinear systems. the complex system concerned is represented by a family of local transfer function models, which are smoothly combined together by characteristic basis functions. the model reference adaptive control law is first designed in each local region and then constructed in the global domain. It is shown that the resulting hierarchical adaptive control system is globally stable. A simulation example is given for demonstration of the application of the method.

No general analytical tools are available to estimate the state of a nonlinear stochastic system observed through a nonlinear noisy channel. this problem is addressed in the paper under the assumption that the statistics of the random variables are unknown, hence a statistical approach is followed instead of a probabilistic one. the following approximations are enforced: (i) the state estimator is finite-memory, (ii) the estimation functions are given fixed structures in which a certain number of parameters have to be optimized (multilayer feedforward neural networks are chosen from among various possible nonlinear approximators), (iii) the algorithms for optimizing the parameters (i.e., the network weights) rely on stochastic approximation. Simulation results are reported to compare the behavior of the proposed estimator with the extended Kalman filter.

the authors have previously (1994) addressed the problem of finding the optimal sequence to route N calls to M queues in parallel, given the prior distribution on the number in system, service time, and interarrival time distributions. We present here several extensions to the above models and results: (a) we consider state dependent service rates; and (b) routing of multiclass arrivals. Furthermore, we discuss the extension of our modeling paradigm to an infinite horizon framework, both for the open-loop and the periodic updates scenarios.

We study the convergence properties of a previously proposed algorithm in the context of solving a class of smooth nonlinear convex optimization problems. With some mild assumptions, it is shown that the algorithm has global convergence with guaranteed accuracy upon termination. Further, an upper bound for the local rate of convergence is derived. It rigorously justifies the efficiency of the algorithm in spite of the fact that the bound is in general conservative.

We discuss the call admission control problem in ATM networks. In particular, we focus on a single node in isolation as a model for the ATM multiplexer, and consider the cell loss probability and the average cell queueing delay in the multiplexer as the quality of service (QoS) performance measures. Difficulties often arise in the analysis for such systems due to the so-called "curse of dimensionality" in calculating some integer-parametered functions, where the integer parameter represents the system size or dimension. Our basic idea is to develop global rational approximation for such systems. Various examples presented in the previous papers have demonstrated the power of the approach. In this paper we apply the rational approximation method to the call admission problem in ATM networks.

In this paper, we show that fluid limits can be used to study the asymptotic throughput of a stochastic closed reentrant line in the infinite population limit. As applications of this technique, the last buffer first serve (LBFS) scheduling policy, and the Harrison-Wein balanced policy for two station networks, are shown to be efficient, i.e., they attain bottleneck throughput in the infinite population limit.

Approximation of optimal feedback policies by multilayer neural networks is investigated from the existence point of view. the optimal control problem is considered in discrete time for a class of summable quality criterions with the target set being the origin. An associated suboptimal control problem is introduced to simplify analysis through relaxation of the final condition and of the optimality requirement. the controller structure is that of static state feedback realized by feedforward multilayered networks with Heaviside neuron activation functions. Under mild assumptions about the system, the obtained results guarantee existence of an appropriate neural network controller, such that the closed-loop system closely follows the open-loop optimal trajectories.

In some cases the most important factor limiting the performance of a distributed control system is not the availability of computational power but rather the availablity of time on a shared communication network for communication between the sensors, the control computer and the actuators. In this paper the author develops a mathematical model describing a class of multivariable control problems of this type and presents an algorithm which can be used to investigate the existence of stabilizing control laws in the presence of communication constraints. the author's model assumes that the communication facilities are to be time-shared according to a pattern which is repeated periodically. the designer has the problem of picking the pattern such that effective control laws can be implemented within the constraints it imposes. If the systems being controlled are linear, there is an affine family of possible closed-loop transition matrices associated with each communication pattern. the selection and implementation of a particular control law which is supported by the given pattern then defines the performance. this approach allows us to put the problem of designing the communication pattern in a form that can be investigated using mathematical programming techniques. In particular one can evaluate the advantages and disadvantages associated with allocating more communication resources to some control loops and less to others.
