A description is given of a project whose objective is to specify and construct a pilot metropolitan area network based on fiber distributed data interface (FDDI). the testing phase began in May and the full pilot network consisting of four class-A stations was operational in July. the next stage is to place this project in public service by the end of the year. FDDI has been chosen because there is an immediate need for connecting local area networks (LANs) together and distributed queue dual bus (DQDB) is not available yet. the pilot network is a 34 km long dual network using single mode fiber and single mode to multimode (SM/MM) converters. Currently the network consists of four Ethernet to FDDI bridges. the goal is to develop testing and measurement methodology for FDDI based networks.

A mixed multiaccess protocol that operates in a broadband environment is presented. the main idea is to have a RMAP (random multiple-access protocol) period followed by a DMAP (deterministic multiaccess protocol) period. CSMA/CD is used during the RMAP period, and the protocol in Expressnet is used during the DMAP period. the proposed protocol is suitable for local area networks in which, because of high data rates or long end-to-end delays, the propagation delay constitutes a large fraction of or is larger than the packet transmission times.

the performance of persistent CSMA/CD protocols for multichannel local area networks is studied using a finite population slotted model. three types of protocols are considered: a 1-persistent protocol, a p-persistent protocol, and a variation of the 1-persistent protocol in which persisting users can transmit their packs only if the number of parallel channels that are sensed idle is larger than a fixed number. the creation of expendable multichannel networks by adaption of the hypercubed architecture used in parallel processing is described. In the hypercube model each processor (cell) deals with extensive message transfers. this concept is extended to communication networks with similar solutions for message handling. the hardware comprises a large number of interconnected IBM PCs in the hypercube configuration. Each of the computers acts as a cell processor and contains one card that includes six full-duplex communication channels with direct memory access capability. Communication is made serially by universal asynchronous receivers/transmitters at a variety of speeds and standards via different media such as phone lines, VHF, and local area network connection. An assessment is presented of the technical and technological solutions adopted in an experimental 140 Mb/s multiservice LAN (local area network) to implement the asynchronous hybrid switching. the network architecture, access techniques, and protocol are discussed. Emphasis is given to the problems raised by the hardware and software design of a basic network node, called the network communication unit. Node design requirements are detailed, focusing on throughput, service quality, operating speed, flexibility, expandability, and modularity of the network.
