Action potentials are the incompressible building blocks of the language of neurons. As a result, their detection in real-time is crucial for the understanding of neural populations in electrophysiology experiments. Higher-level features such as bursts provide as well interesting insights on neural computation. Because of the importance of this problem, a wide range of spike detectors have been developed for the analysis of data from probes such as Micro-Electrode Arrays (MEA). The ability to perform this task online and in real-time further opens potential application like closed-loop bio-hybrid experiments, electroceutics and Brain-Machine-Interfaces (BMIs) could follow this milestone. However, neuroprosthetics and BMIs demand drastic technological constraints in terms of portability, energy consumption and accuracy. We present a FPGA implementation of a Spiking Neural Network (SNN) for real-time online detection of action potentials and bursts as a basis for implementing further functionalities. It shows better result compared to usual methods and its compact architecture takes small amounts of logic, translating into limited power consumption and high level of portability. © 2023 ieee.

biomedical waste is the combined solid and liquid waste produced during human and animal treatment and research activities. These wastes include human anatomical wastes such as tissue, internal organs, body parts and animal wastes from veterinary clinics, microbial and biotechnological wastes, broken glass, sharp edged knives, chronic drugs, poisons etc., The bandages, adhesive tapes, unusable Blood waste ducts, ureteric ducts, liquid wastes, diseased areas, ash particles and chemical wastes. In this paper, an Enhanced Deep Learning Analytics Method has proposed for Managing biomedical Waste Monitoring and Management Operations. Many health disorders occur due to poor maintenance. For example, medical staff is injured by knives. And increased ill health for waste handlers, spread of pathogens, and unusable chronic drugs and related products causing ill health. © 2023 ieee.

This paper proposes a highly supply voltage-scalable, low-power and compact-area temperature sensor, which satisfies the requirements for systems-on-Chip (SoCs) and microprocessors hotspots monitoring. The proposed novel sensor structure employs diode-connected NMOS devices operating in sub-thresold, featuring different sizes, as sensing elements, in order to implement a proportional-to-absolute-temperature (PTAT) sensor output voltage. The proposed sensor does not require any additional biasing or start-up circuits and, since it mostly processes the signals generated by the sensing elements in the current domain, enables high supply voltage scalability. Furthermore, a low-cost 1-point temperature calibration algorithm can be employed for trimming the sensor sensitivity. The proposed sensor circuit was designed in a 130-nm CMOS process and its performance was verified through extensive simulations in the Cadence Virtuoso environment. © 2023 ieee.

Shunt current measurements are widely used for monitoring and controlling the current flow in various applications, such as power converters and battery management systems (BMS). The accuracy and resolution of this kind of measurements depend on the performance of the sample-and-hold (S/H) circuit that captures the voltage across a shunt resistor. In this paper, we propose a noise analysis of a S/H circuit that operates in accumulation mode;this technique enables to lower the thermal noise by 3 dB for every doubling of the number of accumulation cycles. The proposed analysis, confirmed by extensive simulation results, demonstrates that this approach offers a lower noise power spectral density and a higher signal-to-noise ratio if compared with conventional amplification-based S/H solutions. © 2023 ieee.

This paper presents a new CAN (Controller Area Network) receiver, which is suited for multi-bit communication. Two alternative designs are described. The former provides better performance in terms of threshold voltage accuracy and pulse width symmetry, the latter is optimized in terms of area, but provides worse results regarding all the other key parameters. In both receivers, flash analog-to-digital conversion is used, which is performed during the data transmission phase and gives 4 pulses at the output that can be converted to a binary representation by an encoder. During arbitration the receivers behave conventionally. A chip of the second design described was produced using a 0.18- μm high voltage BCD technology. The circuit draws an average current of 5 mA from a 5-V supply. © 2023 ieee.

Healthcare cybersecurity is crucial for protecting hospitals' networks and computing systems from malicious cyber-attacks. With the increasing motivation and capability of cyber attackers, it is necessary to secure the software and hardware infrastructure of biomedical computing systems used in healthcare. Due to the increasingly digitized nature of modern biomedical devices used in healthcare systems, effective cybersecurity solutions have become more essential. Traditional security protocols focused on software-level protection, with the underlying hardware assumed to be secure. However, recent studies have revealed vulnerabilities in hardware that attackers can exploit to compromise computing systems. To address this, in this paper a bottom-up approach is proposed, delegating security to the underlying hardware to enhance the security and cost-efficiency with less visibility to the attacker. This paper aims to develop effective intelligent countermeasures for hardware-assisted cyber-security at run-time in biomedical devices. It leverages processors' performance events via Hardware Performance Counters (HPCs) combined with Machine Learning (ML) techniques to fortify biomedical devices at the hardware level. To achieve this objective, we introduce a tailored and cost-effective hardware monitoring framework, complemented by a machine learning-enabled methodology. This approach enhances the accuracy and efficiency of malware detection and identification using real-time data from biomedical processors' hardware events. The experimental results demonstrate that the XGBoost model, using 4 hardware events, excels in malware detection, boasting 95% detection rate (F-measure and Accuracy), efficient resource utilization, and low inference latency. Additionally, the ExtraTree classifier achieves 87% F-measure and exhibits swift performance in classifying malware types in real-time. © 2023 ieee.

Two new modifications of second-order low-frequency discrete-analog filters (DAFs) based on switched capacitors with two electronic keys have been developed and investigated. The first modification contains a resistive signal adder based on a buffer amplifier, in the second modification the signal adder is implemented on a differential difference operational amplifier. The basic formulas for the transmission coefficient at zero frequency and pole frequency, and also a frequency and attenuation of the pole are given. The transmission coefficient of new circuits in the passband does not depend on the capacitances of the frequency-setting capacitors. Computer modeling was performed in the Micro-Cap environment, which confirms the coincidence of the calculated main parameters of the DAF and their time characteristics. The developed DAFs were studied at various input signal frequencies, which differ by several orders of magnitude, including the low, medium and high frequency ranges. It is shown that the graph of the DAF output signal has a 'step' character, which corresponds to the physical processes of signal conversion in filters of the class under consideration. The low parametric sensitivity of presented DAF circuits is achieved by the fact that the pole attenuation and transmission coefficient of such DAFs cease to depend on the parameters of the tuning elements. © 2024 ieee.

Regular physical exercise can improve lung function and asthma control, especially in individuals with asthma who are overweight or obese. Nevertheless, being active or exercising could be a risk factor for asthma exacerbations. Monitoring physiological signals during exercise may help to detect potential worsening in asthma and could be used to help persons with asthma to adjust their exercise. Our goal was to determine whether small airway narrowing due to exercise could be predicted using conveniently recorded data including participant's demographics and respiratory-related signals. In this study, 10 adults with asthma and body mass index (BMI) over 25 kg/m2 were asked to cycle for 10 minutes in a room at 20°C. During exercise, the respiratory signals were recorded using inductance plethysmography on the chest and abdomen. Before and after exercise, small airway narrowing was assessed based on respiratory impedance measured by forced oscillation technique. From the chest respiratory signal and demographic data, a total of four features have been obtained in the time domain. To detect airway narrowing, five different machine learning classifiers were fine-tuned and evaluated using a leave-one-subject-out cross-validation approach. The best model had an accuracy of 77.01%, a recall of 82.69%, a specificity of 68.57%, a precision of 79.63%, and an F1 score of 81.13%. These results provide proof of concept that technologies with embedded respiratory signal monitoring may be able to predict airway narrowing during exercise in individuals with asthma, particularly in the overweight or obese population. © 2023 ieee.

This paper presents a decentralised signal classification approach for data acquired using Internet of Things (IoT) wearable sensors. Traditionally, data from IoT sensors are processed in a centralised fashion, and in a single node. This approach has several limitations, such as high energy consumption on the edge sensor, longer response times, etc. We present a distributed processing approach for convolutional neural network (CNN) based classifiers where a single CNN model can be split into multiple sub-networks using early exits. To reduce the transfer of large feature maps between sub-networks, we introduced an encoder-decoder pair at the exit points. Processing of inputs that can be classified with high confidence at an exit point will be terminated early, without needing to traverse the entire network. The initial sub-networks can be deployed on the edge to reduce sensor energy consumption and overall complexity. We also experimented with multiple exit point locations and show that the point of exit can be adjusted for trade-offs between complexity and performance. The proposed system can achieve a sensitivity of 98.45% and an accuracy of 97.55% for electrocardiogram (ECG) classification and save 60% of the data transmitted wirelessly while reducing 38.45% of the complexity.

This paper presents a manufacturing process for flexible optical waveguides made of biocompatible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to be attached to future optogenetic implants. Based on a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), the system uses integrated single photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) as sensors for fluorescence imaging (FI) and post-CMOS micro light-emitting diodes (mu LEDs) for stimulation [1]. Attaching fibers to SPADs and mu LEDs to collect and distribute light from and to deeper brain layers can unfold previously unachieved medical applications. Two technologies for biocompatible waveguide manufacturing are presented: thin-film and molding. Such a combination of integrated bidirectional implantable ASICs with custom waveguide manufacturing is not limited to medical scenarios but opens up a broad field of applications.
