Modeling the deformation of shapes under constraints on both perimeter and area is a challenging task due to the highly nontrivial interaction between the need for flexible local rules for manipulating the boundary and the global constraints. We propose several methods to address this problem and generate ldquorandom walksrdquo in the space of shapes obeying quite general possibly time varying constraints on their perimeter and area. Design of perimeter and area preserving deformations are an interesting and useful special case of this problem. The resulting deformation models are employed in annealing processes that evolve original shapes toward shapes that are optimal in terms of boundary bending-energy or other functionals. Furthermore, such models may find applications in the analysis of sequences of real images of deforming objects obeying global constraints as building blocks for registration and tracking algorithms.

In this paper we describe a fully integrated, real-time, miniaturized embedded stereo vision system (MESVS-II), which fits within 5times5cm and consumes very low power. This is a significant improvement over the original MESVS-I system in terms of performance, quality and accuracy of results. MESVS-II running at 600MHz per core, is capable of operating at up to 20 fps, which is twice as fast as MESVS-I, due to the efficient implementation of stereo-vision algorithms, improved memory and data management, in-place processing scheme, code optimization, and the pipelined-programming model that takes advantage of the dual-core architecture of the embedded processor. The firmware incorporates sub-sampling, rectification, pre-processing, matching, LRC (Left/Right Consistency) check and post-processing. As demonstrated by our experimental results, we have also enhanced the robustness of the stereo-matching engine to radiometric variations by choosing census transform over rank transform.

This paper considers the problem of selecting iconic images to summarize general visual categories. We define iconic images as high-quality representatives of a large group of images consistent both in appearance and semantics. To find such groups, we perform joint clustering in the space of global image descriptors and latent topic vectors of tags associated with the images. To select the representative iconic images for the joint clusters, we use a quality ranking learned from a large collection of labeled images. For the purposes of visualization, iconic images are grouped by semantic ldquothemerdquo and multidimensional scaling is used to compute a 2D layout that reflects the relationships between the themes. Results on four large-scale datasets demonstrate the ability of our approach to discover plausible themes and recurring visual motifs for challenging abstract concepts such as ldquoloverdquo and ldquobeautyrdquo.

The lack of a written representation for American sign language (ASL) makes it difficult to do something as commonplace as looking up an unknown word in a dictionary. The majority of printed dictionaries organize ASL signs (represented in drawings or pictures) based on their nearest English translation; so unless one already knows the meaning of a sign, dictionary look-up is not a simple proposition. In this paper we introduce the ASL lexicon video dataset, a large and expanding public dataset containing video sequences of thousands of distinct ASL signs, as well as annotations of those sequences, including start/end frames and class label of every sign. This dataset is being created as part of a project to develop a computer vision system that allows users to look up the meaning of an ASL sign. At the same time, the dataset can be useful for benchmarking a variety of computer vision and machine learning methods designed for learning and/or indexing a large number of visual classes, and especially approaches for analyzing gestures and human communication.

In this paper, we propose using multi-scale Conditional Random Fields to classes 3D outdoor terrestrial laser scanned data. We improved Lim and Suterpsilas methods by introducing regional edge potentials in addition to the local edge and node potentials in the multi-scale Conditional Random Fields, and only a relatively small amount of increment in the computation time is required to achieve the improved recognition rate. In the model, the raw data points are over-segmented into an improved mid-level representation, ldquosuper-voxelsrdquo. Local and regional features are then extracted from the super-voxel and parameters learnt by the multi-scale Conditional Random Fields. The classification accuracy is improved by 5% to 10% with our proposed model compared to labeling with Conditional Random Fields in (Lim and Suter, 2007). The overall computation time by labeling the super-voxels instead of individual points is lower than the previous 3D data labeling approaches.

Real-world gesture controlled applications are not yet widely present mainly due to strong practical constraints. As a step toward realizing a practical, affordable, low-power, real time, low-latency gesture control, we present a smart camera system and an algorithm for upper body pose reconstruction implemented on the system. A single-instruction multiple-data (SIMD) processor on a smart camera platform is used to detect person head and hands. The detected hand and head candidate positions are then transmitted to a central processor (a PC) where the data is combined and final decisions are made. Implementation of a computer vision algorithm on the SIMD camera processor is presented. We also describe the whole wireless smart camera system and analyze the performance and practical issues.

We describe a GPU-based implementation of motion detection from a moving platform. Motion detection from a moving platform is inherently difficult as the moving camera induces 2D motion field in the entire image. A step compensating for camera motion is required prior to estimating of the background model. Due to inevitable registration errors, the background model is estimated according to a sliding window of frames to avoid the case where erroneous registration influences the quality of the detection for the whole sequence. However, this approach involves several characteristics that put a heavy burden on real-time CPU implementation. We exploit GPU to achieve significant acceleration over standard CPU implementations. Our GPU-based implementation can build the background model and detect motion regions at around 18 fps on 320times240 videos that are captured for a moving camera.

We describe a new approach to vision-based 3D object tracking, using appearance-based particle filters to follow 3D model reconstructions. This method is targeted towards modern graphics processors, which are optimized for 3D reconstruction and are capable of highly parallel computation. We discuss an OpenGL implementation of this approach, which uses two rendering passes to update the particle filter weights. In the first pass, the system renders the previous object state estimates to an off-screen framebuffer. In the second pass, the system uses a programmable vertex shader to compute the mean normalized cross-correlation between each sample and the subsequent video frame. The particle filters are updated using the correlation scores and provide a full 3D track of the objects. We provide examples for tracking human heads in both single and multi-camera scenarios.

With increasing technical advances, computer graphics are becoming more photorealistic. Therefore, it is important to develop methods for distinguishing between actual photographs from digital cameras and computer generated images. We describe a novel approach to this problem. Rather than focusing on the statistical differences between the image textures, we recognize that images from digital cameras contain traces of resampling as a result of using a color filter array with demosaicing algorithms. We recognize that estimation of the actual demosaicing parameters is not necessary; rather, detection of the presence of demosaicing is the key. The in-camera processing (rather than the image content) distinguishes the digital camera photographs from computer graphics. Our results show high reliability on a standard test set of JPEG compressed images from consumer digital cameras. Further, we show the application of these ideas for accurately localizing forged regions within digital camera images.

This paper presents a novel method to support environmental perception of mobile robots by the use of a global feature map. While typical approaches to simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) mainly rely on an on-board camera for mapping, our approach uses geographically referenced aerial or satellite images to build a map in advance. The current position on the map is determined by matching features from the on-board camera to the global feature map. The problem of feature matching is posed as a standard point pattern matching problem and a solution using the iterative closest point method is given. The proposed algorithm is designed for use in a street vehicle and uses lane markings as features, but can be adapted to almost any other type of feature that is visible in aerial images. Our approach allows for estimating the robot position at a higher precision than by a purely GPS-based localization, while at the same time providing information about the environment far beyond the current field of view.
