Segmentation of blood vessels and extraction of their centerlines in 3D angiography are essential to diagnosis and prognosis of vascular diseases, and advanced image processing and analysis. In this paper, we propose a semi-automatic method to perform those two tasks simultaneously. A user supplies two end points to the algorithm and a vessel centerline between the two given points is extracted automatically. Local vessel widths are estimated as byproducts. Additional anchor points can be added in between to handle difficult situation. Our method is based upon a polygonal line algorithm. This algorithm is used to find principal curves, nonlinear generalization of principal components, from point clouds. We discuss an application of principal curve to vessel extraction from a theoretical view point. A novel algorithm is then proposed for the application. No data interpolation is needed in the algorithm and centerlines extracted are adaptive to the vasculature complexity on account of their nonparametric representation. We have tested the method on two synthetic data sets and two clinical data sets. Results show that it has high robustness to variation in image resolution, voxel anisotropy and noise. Moreover, centerlines obtained are in subvoxel precision and local widths estimated are accurate under limit of image resolution.

Communication networks, such as networks formed by phone calls and email communications, can be modeled as dynamic graphs with vertices representing agents and edges representing communications. Anomaly detection is to identify abnormal behaviour occurring in these networks. This is crucial for anti-terrorism, resource allocation and network management. The contents of the communications are often unavailable or protected by regulations or encryption, which makes linkage information the only type of data we can rely on in order to identify anomalies. In this paper, we propose a link-based anomaly detection method that considers deviations from individual patterns by taking into account the behaviour pattern of the cluster to which the individual belongs. Clusters can be formed by a standard clustering procedure or based on a specific attribute depending on the dataset. Experiments show that this method performs well on both network traffic and email communication data. © 2008 ieee.

Endoscopy has become an established procedure for the diagnosis and therapy of various gastrointestinal (GI) ailments, and has also emerged as a commonly-used technique for minimally-invasive surgery. Most existing endoscopes are monocular, with stereo-endoscopy facing practical difficulties, preventing the physicians/surgeons from having a desired, realistic 3D view. Traditional monocular 3D reconstruction approaches (e.g., structure from motion) face extraordinary challenges for this application due to issues including noisy data, lack of textures supporting robust feature matching, nonrigidity of the objects, and glare artifacts from the imaging process, etc. In this paper, we propose a method to automatically reconstruct 3D structure from a monocular endoscopic video. Our approach attempts to address the above challenges by incorporating a circular generalized cylinder (CGC) model in 3D reconstruction. The CGC model is decomposed as a series of 3D circles. To reconstruct this model, we formulate the problem as one of maximum a posteriori estimation within a Markov random field framework, so as to ensure the smoothness constraints of the CGC model and to support robust search for the optimal solution, which is achieved by a two-stage heuristic search scheme. Both simulated and real data experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

We propose a gaze estimation method that substantially relaxes the practical constraints possessed by most conventional methods. Gaze estimation research has a long history, and many systems including some commercial schemes have been proposed. However, the application domain of gaze estimation is still limited (e.g, measurement devices for HCI issues, input devices for VDT works) due to the limitations of such systems. First, users must be close to the system (or must wear it) since most systems employ IR illumination and/or stereo cameras. Second, users are required to perform manual calibrations to get geometrically meaningful data. These limitations prevent applications of the system that capture and utilize useful human gaze information in daily situations. In our method, inspired by a bundled adjustment framework, the parameters of the 3D head-eye model are robustly estimated by minimizing pixel-wise re-projection errors between single-camera input images and eye model projections for multiple frames with adjacently estimated head poses. Since this process runs automatically, users does not need to be aware of it. Using the estimated parameters, 3D head poses and gaze directions for newly observed images can be directly determined with the same error minimization manner. This mechanism enables robust gaze estimation with single-camera-based low resolution images without user-aware preparation tasks (i.e., calibration). Experimental results show the proposed method achieves 6deg accuracy with QVGA (320 times 240) images. The proposed algorithm is free from observation distances. We confirmed that our system works with long-distance observations (10 meters).

A humanoid robot generally has more than thirty DOFs to be controlled in real-time and needs to deal with information of multiple sensors such as encoders, force and moment sensors, inertial attitude sensors and vision sensors. Therefore an effective control system is crucial for the humanoid robot. In this paper, we propose a distributed computer system consisting of the online planning sub-system and the real-time motion control sub-system based on CAN bus and Ethernet for humanoid robots. CAN bus is used for distributed real-time motion control and Ethernet is used for non-real-time and large data quantities communication between the online planning and motion control sub-systems. The Windows and RT-Linux are used as operating systems for the online planning and motion control sub-systems respectively. The walking pattern control modifies the planned walking pattern based on sensory information when there are unexpected sudden events. The effectiveness of our proposed computer system and walking pattern control method was confirmed by walking experiments on our newly-built humanoid robot. © 2008 ieee.

This paper addresses the design of an ambient agent model that incorporates model-based reasoning methods for the analysis of internal causes of observed undesired behaviours of a human, and for determination of actions that remedy such causes. The models used are based on causal and dynamical relations and integrate numerical aspects. By the model-based reasoning methods hypotheses, observations and actions are generated. Control parameters within these processes are described that allow the ambient agent to focus the reasoning. These control parameters are related to each other and to specific domain and situation characteristics, such as time pressure, or criticality of a situation. © 2008 ieee.

Visual surveillance in outdoor environments requires the monitoring of both objects and events. The analysis is generally driven by the target application which, in turn, determines the set of relevant events and objects to be analyzed. In this paper we concentrate on the analysis of outdoor scenes, in particular for vehicle traffic control. In this scenario, the analysis of weather conditions is considered to signal particular and potentially dangerous situations like the presence of snow, fog, or heavy rain. The developed system uses a statistical framework based on the mixture of Gaussians to identify changes both in the spatial and temporal frequencies which characterize specific meteorological events. Several experiments performed on standard databases and real scenes demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach. © 2008 ieee.

By the development of network applications, network security issues are getting more and more important. This paper proposes a multiple-pattern matching algorithm for the network intrusion detection systems based on the GPU (Graphics Processing Units). The highly parallelism of the GPU computation power is used to inspect the packet content in parallel. The performance of the proposed approach is analyzed through evaluations such as using various texture formats and different implementations. Experimental results indicate that the performance of the proposed approach is twice of that of the modified Wu-Manber algorithm used in Snort. The proposed approach makes a commodity and cheap GPU card as a high performance pattern matching co-processor.

Feature extraction is a major step in all pattern recognition and image processing applications. Conventional feature extraction methods when used for extracting physical quantities like mean, entropy etc. are not suitable for automation due to complexity of the feature extraction process. In this paper we propose a simple and novel feature extraction technique that decomposes the original image into a series of sparse images using a time varying selection criterion on the spatial plane. Features are then extracted from each of these sparse images. The feature set, when carefully analyzed and interpreted, is seen to perform as well or even better than their conventional counterparts for recognition and classification. The technique is demonstrated to be robust against noise and results in highly discriminatory features. Also, in this paper the technique to obtain shift invariant features is proposed.

The variability of tensor fields is usually analyzed with multivariate statistical distributions. Multivariate distributions model every component of the tensor, which are not invariant under rotation. They therefore tell very little information about the true shape of the tensor. A statistical analysis on the eigenvalues of the tensor would be more revealing. The eigenvalues determine if a tensor is uniaxial, i.e.: only one eigenvalue is different from zero, isotropic, volume preserving or purely anisotropic. However, the eigenvalues of a normally distributed tensor are not, in general, normally distributed. In this paper, we solve this problem directly for small sizes of samples by determining the probability that the maximum error is within a reasonable bound. When the error is likely to be within a reasonable bound, we consider the eigenvalues of a tensor to be normally distributed along a mean eigendirection. Monte Carlo simulation shows that the computed bound is tight and becomes tighter when the number of sample increases. An application of the method, analysis of deformations on the cortical surface, is presented in this paper. On this data, we found that 80% of the anisotropic deformations could be analyzed by modeling the eigenvalues directly. Thus, the proposed method allows formulating statistical hypothesis directly on eigenvalues in many cases of measured deformations. Although the method was used in only one application, the method could be extended to application involving diffusion MRI or other imaging technique involving tensors.
