In this paper we investigate how to perform face recognition on the hardest experiment (Exp4) in Face recognition Grand Challenge(FRGC) phase-II data which deals with subjects captured under uncontrolled conditions such as harsh overhead illumination, some pose variations and facial expressions in both indoor and outdoor environments. Other variations include the presence and absence of eye-glasses. The database consists of a generic dataset of 12,776 images for training a generic face subspace, a target set of 16,028 images and a query set of 8,014 images are given for matching. We propose to use our novel face recognition algorithm using Kernel Correlation Feature Analysis for dimensionality reduction (222 features) coupled with Support Vector Machine discriminative training in the Target KCFA feature set for providing a similarity distance measure of the probe to each target subject. We show that this algorithm configuration yields the best verification rate at 0.1% FAR (87.5%) compared to PCA+SVM, GSLDA+SVM, SVM+SVM, KDA+SVM. Thus we explore with our proposed algorithm which facial regions provide the best discrimination ability, we analyze performing partial face recognition using the eye-region, nose region and mouth region. We empirically find that the eye-region is the most discriminative feature of the faces in FRGC data and yields a verification rate closest to the holistic face recognition of 83.5% @ 0.1% FAR compared to 87.5%. We use Support Vector Machines for fusing these two to boost the performance to ∼90@0.1 % FAR on the first large-scale face database such as the FRGC dataset. © 2006 ieee.

We introduce a discriminative hidden-state approach for the recognition of human gestures. Gesture sequences often have a complex underlying structure, and models that can incorporate hidden structures have proven to be advantageous for recognition tasks. Most existing approaches to gesture recognition with hidden states employ a Hidden Markov Model or suitable variant (e.g., a factored or coupled state model) to model gesture streams;a significant limitation of these models is the requirement of conditional independence of observations. In addition, hidden states in a generative model are selected to maximize the likelihood of generating all the examples of a given gesture class, which is not necessarily optimal for discriminating the gesture class against other gestures. Previous discriminative approaches to gesture sequence recognition have shown promising results, but have not incorporated hidden states nor addressed the problem of predicting the label of an entire sequence. In this paper, we derive a discriminative sequence model with a hidden state structure, and demonstrate its utility both in a detection and in a multi-way classification formulation. We evaluate our method on the task of recognizing human arm and head gestures, and compare the performance of our method to both generative hidden state and discriminative fully-observable models. © 2006 ieee.

We present a novel method for jointly performing recognition of complex events and linking fragmented tracks into coherent, long-duration tracks. Many event recognition methods require highly accurate tracking, and may fail when tracks corresponding to event actors are fragmented or partially missing. However, these conditions occur frequently from occlusions, traffic and tracking errors. Recently, methods have been proposed for linking track fragments from multiple objects under these difficult conditions. Here, we develop a method for solving these two problems jointly. A hypothesized event model, represented as a Dynamic Bayes Net, supplies data-driven constraints on the likelihood of proposed track fragment matches. These event-guided constraints are combined with appearance and kinematic constraints used in the previous track linking formulation. The result is the most likely track linking solution given the event model, and the highest event score given all of the track fragments. The event model with the highest score is determined to have occurred, if the score exceeds a threshold. Results demonstrated on a busy scene of airplane servicing activities, where many non-event movers and long fragmented tracks are present, show the promise of the approach to solving the joint problem. © 2006 ieee.

Edge detection is one of the most studied problems in computer vision, yet it remains a very challenging task. It is difficult since often the decision for an edge cannot be made purely based on low level cues such as gradient, instead we need to engage all levels of information, low, middle, and high, in order to decide where to put edges. In this paper we propose a novel supervised learning algorithm for edge and object boundary detection which we refer to as Boosted Edge Learning or BEL for short. A decision of an edge point is made independently at each location in the image;a very large aperture is used providing significant context for each decision. In the learning stage, the algorithm selects and combines a large number of features across different scales in order to learn a discriminative model using an extended version of the Probabilistic Boosting Tree classification algorithm. The learning based framework is highly adaptive and there are no parameters to tune. We show applications for edge detection in a number of specific image domains as well as on natural images. We test on various datasets including the Berkeley dataset and the results obtained are very good. © 2006 ieee.

Dynamic appearance is one of the most important cues for tracking and identifying moving people. However, direct modeling spatio-temporal variations of such appearance is often a difficult problem due to their high dimensionality and nonlinearities. In this paper we present a human tracking system that uses a dynamic appearance and motion modeling framework based on the use of robust system dynamics identification and nonlinear dimensionality reduction techniques. The proposed system learns dynamic appearance and motion models from a small set of initial frames and does not require prior knowledge such as gender or type of activity. The advantages of the proposed tracking system are illustrated with several examples where the learned dynamics accurately predict the location and appearance of the targets in future frames, preventing tracking failures due to model drifting, target occlusion and scene clutter. © 2006 ieee.

We demonstrate a method for identifying images containing categories of animals. The images we classify depict animals in a wide range of aspects, configurations and appearances. In addition, the images typically portray multiple species that differ in appearance (e.g. ukari's, vervet monkeys, spider monkeys, rhesus monkeys, etc.). Our method is accurate despite this variation and relies on four simple cues: text, color, shape and texture. Visual cues are evaluated by a voting method that compares local image phenomena with a number of visual exemplars for the category. The visual exemplars are obtained using a clustering method applied to text on web pages. The only supervision required involves identifying which clusters of exemplars refer to which sense of a term (for example, "monkey" can refer to an animal or a bandmember). Because our method is applied to web pages with free text, the word cue is extremely noisy. We show unequivocal evidence that visual information improves performance for our task. Our method allows us to produce large, accurate and challenging visual datasets mostly automatically. © 2006 ieee.

Inspired by multi-scale tensor voting, a computational framework for perceptual grouping and segmentation, we propose an edge-directed technique for color image super-resolution given a single low-resolution color image. Our multi-scale technique combines the advantages of edge-directed, reconstruction-based and learning-based methods, and is unique in two ways. First, we consider simultaneously all the three color channels in our multi-scale tensor voting framework to produce a multi-scale edge representation to guide the process of high-resolution color image reconstruction, which is subject to the back projection constraint. Fine details are inferred without noticeable blurry or ringing artifacts. Second, the inference of high-resolution curves is achieved by multi-scale tensor voting, using the dense voting field as an edge-preserving smoothness prior which is derived geometrically without any time-consuming learning procedure. Qualitative and quantitative results indicate that our method produces convincing results in complex test cases typically used by state-of-the-art image super-resolution techniques. © 2006 ieee.

Identifying or matching the surface color of a moving object in surveillance video is critical for achieving reliable object-tracking and searching. Traditional color models provide little help, since the surface of an object is usually not flat, the object's motion can alter the surface's orientation, and the lighting conditions can vary when the object moves. To tackle this research problem, we conduct extensive data mining on video clips collected under various lighting conditions and distances from several video-cameras. We observe how each of the eleven culture colors can drift in the color space when an object's surface is in motion. In the color space, we then learn the drift pattern of each culture color for classifying unseen surface colors. Finally, we devise a distance function taking color drift into consideration to perform color identification and matching. Empirical studies show our approach to be very promising: achieving over 95% color-prediction accuracy. © 2006 ieee.

We present a tunable representation for tracking that simultaneously encodes appearance and geometry in a manner that enables the use of mean-shift iterations for tracking. The classic formulation of the tracking problem using mean-shift iterations encodes spatial information very loosely (i.e. using radially symmetric kernels). A problem with such a formulation is that it becomes easy for the tracker to get confused with other objects having the same feature distribution but different spatial configurations of features. Subsequent approaches have addressed this issue but not to the degree of generality required for tracking specific classes of objects and motions (e.g. humans walking). In this paper, we formulate the tracking problem in a manner that encodes the spatial configuration of features along with their density and yet retains robustness to spatial deformations and feature density variations. The encoding of spatial configuration is done using a set of kernels whose parameters can be optimized for a given class of objects and motions, off-line. The formulation enables the use of mean-shift iterations and runs in real-time. We demonstrate better tracking results on synthetic and real image sequences as compared to the original mean-shift tracker. © 2006 ieee.

This paper introduces a complete pipeline of image processing methods in order to analyze and track the internal structures of a composite material. As a first step, input X-ray images are denoised, enhanced, separated into different morphological components, and geometrically filtered in order to isolate the interesting fiber inside the composite material. This requires the design of specific algorithms preserving very thin image details while being able to remove undesired image regions that may be sometimes large. For this purpose, we use state-of the-art techniques based on recent achievements in diffusion PDE's and modem harmonic analysis tools. Then, the shapes of the remaining fibered composite are individually analyzed by the use of a tensor-based tracking algorithm. We illustrate how this set of techniques allows the dynamic analysis of the composite structure when submitted to external mechanical loads. © 2006 ieee.
