Interactive graphics facilitates the investigation of complex relationships between experimental and theoretical data in the neurosciences. graphics affords unique insights into data structure and model properties which are difficult to obtain using other computational media; modeling, simulation and analysis gain in vitality and power. This paper describes a computational system used in the modeling and analysis of neuronal data.

GENERALIZED APPROACH TO LINEAR METHODS OF FEATURE EXTRACTION.

The goal of feature extraction in pattern recognition is to reduce the dimensionality of the space in which classes of data are represented without greatly reducing the separability of the classes. An approach to feature extraction based on functions of the class correlation matrices are chosen, the present method extends the methods of feature extraction proposed by K. Fukunaga and W. L. G. Koontz. If certain types of nonlinear functions are employed, the method reduces to the orthogonal subspace method of Wantanabe. Optimization of selected features through selection of appropriate functions is discussed briefly. Preliminary results of classification of radar signatures using the feature extraction methods described here are presented.

A higher-level programming language permits the specification and manipulation of data abstractions. This allows the physical representative of the data in the computer memory to be invisible to the user. The physical representation is, however, important because it determines the efficiency inherent in the use of the objects being conceptualized. It provides a framework for considerations of how data can be organized in a structured way. This paper discusses the problem of data structuring for an associative memory - a memory in which data is addressed by content rather than by physical location. Topics discussed are primitive data types, primitive data structures and mode specifications.

COMPARATIVE STUDY OF TEXTURE MEASURES FOR TERRAIN CLASSIFICATION.

Three standard approaches to automatic texture classification make use of features based on the Fourier power spectrum, on gray level co-occurrences, and on statistics of local properties, respectively. In this paper, features of these types are applied to a set of 54 picture samples taken from aerial photographs of nine terrain types (Lake, Marsh, Orchard, Railroad, Scrub, Suburb, Swamp, Urban, and Woods). Classification results are compared for individual features and pairs of features within each feature class. In general, the Fourier based features performed poorest, while those based on statistics of gray level differences performed best.

This paper establishes absolute bounds on the amount of memory required to perform pattern-recognition tasks with a misclassification rate not exceeding a specified level. pattern-recognition activities are viewed as communication channels with sample sets as inputs and decision rules as outputs. Shannon's rate-distortion theory gives rise to language-independent bounds on the complexity of class descriptions as a function of the number of samples, the size of the data space and the error level tolerated.

SOME OBSERVATIONS ON LINGUISTICS FOR SCENE ANALYSIS.

Despite the numerous linguistic and syntactic procedures proposed for scene analysis, the features in terms of which a real scene can be modelled have not been defined in a comprehensive manner. In the processing of the image of a real scene a profusion of features are obtained. A large percentage of these are extraneous while some critical ones used in the linguistic description will be missing. To find a predefined combination of features from such a collection, even on a probabilistic basis, results in a combinatorial explosion. Yet, in the literature on psychology of vision, on the effects of brain damage, on how to draw pictures, etc. , there is a wealth of hints on how ″biological systems″ appear to solve the scene analysis problem. To biological systems, scene analysis ″comes naturally″ ; one is not even aware that the problem exists. Some observational results will be compared with computational procedures.

As the cost of interactive graphics systems continues to decline the economics of acquiring the hardware is seen as but one of several important problems to be faced. The next most important problem areas are: (1) Generalizing computer-aided design techniques so as to allow use of graphics systems in a wide range of application areas without developing new procedures and programs for each application; (2) Improving the performance of the overall system so that inexpensive hardware can support interactive design functions using data bases of substantial size. While the issues that pertain to the development of a general methodology for interactive computer-aided design are outside of the primary focus of this paper, a model is presented of a genegraphics design system so as to facilitate discussion of the data base considerations within such a system.

Criteria which facilitate the design of an automatic data manager for a large data base are proposed. A syntactic pattern definition language provides a set of subdefinitions which can be preprocessed. A total expected cost graph for a pattern definition set is used to define preprocessed sets for various costs. The problem of the design of preprocessor or automatic data manager is related to the specification of an appropriate adaptive system.

The concepts of memory hierarchies are familiar, but perhaps less obvious are the effects of new memory structures on data manipulation techniques. This paper describes some of these effects as they apply to data management in the areas of computer graphics and pattern recognition. Several examples of new computing capabilities are presented, illustrating in particular the use of specialized memories for specific functions. The types of improved processing capabilities proposed for picture processing are: (1) flexible data field lengths, so that element descriptions can be coded into economical memory space without great programming effort, (2) means to handle lists of items, as in attribute lists, and (3) form conversion, for translating between internal and display formats. Of principal interest is the ability to provide these capabilities within a computer system capable of efficient numerical processing, so that such efforsts as digital filtering can also be carried out.
