The efficiency of a man-machine system will be improved as a whole, if a user can get access to shared data by ones daily ill-defined terminology. This paper considers an interface between shared color data and color names in a color graphic application system like INFADS. It shows that the association of a color name with shared color data can be accomplished in a normalized relational form regarding the color name as a fuzzy set.

This paper describes an image dependent two-dimensional nonlinear spatial filter designed to be a resolution preserving textural feature extractor for image data. The textural transform is based on the neighboring grey tone co-occurrence properties of the image to be transformed. Classification experiments with the textural transform on satellite multispectral scanner imagery over forrested areas show that higher identification accuracy can be achieved when using combined spectral and textural information than when using only spectral information.

The spectral ratio has proven to be an effective discriminant between the short period seismic signatures of nuclear detonations and earthquakes with epicenter distances of less than 20 degrees. This study extends the spectral ratio technique to teleseismic distances, 20 to 110 degrees, by considering its time trace. The interactive analytical model was implemented on a terminal acoustically coupled to a CDC 6400 computer. The error checked and reformatted commands were then transmitted to the more powerful CDC 6600 for acquisition and reduction of the seismic data base.

Segmentation of a picture into regions of uniform ″visual impression″ is a necessary step in many pattern recognition applications. A data structure is described for efficient segmentation by texture in general, and computing Fourier transforms in particular. This is done by showing ways to estimate the transform over nonrectangular regions in a meaningful way. The basic data structure is formed by dividing the picture recursively into four, sixteen, sixty-four, etc. , parts and then creating a tree whose nodes correspond to regions of the picture. The successors of a node correspond to the four subsets of its region. Such a data structure has already been used for segmentation by average brightness level. This tree is referred to as the picture pyramid. The basis algorithm for segmentation is outlined. In general the use of the split-and-merge procedure in combination with the picture pyramid data structure allows fast updating of the texture descriptors (including the Fourier transform) as the regions are modified during interations of the algorithm.

The authors consider how to structure the world model so that it will be able to guide the recognition process. For static representation of concepts, visually seen objects, and their relationships, a lattice structure has been used. The lattice structure is felt to embody certain natural orderings among concepts, such as the generalization and complexity aspects. In addition to the static representation, there has been introduced a dynamic mechanism called conceptual focusing and defocusing. This process enables one to organize the search for certain objects in more efficient and meaningful way.

This paper describes the basis of a syntactic approach to the problem of electrocardiographic rhythm interpretation. The general use of syntactic methods for pattern recognition has been described by K. S. Fu. The problem of interpreting an output sequences of a stochastic finite-state automaton M is defined to be the problem of finding the sequence of states w for which p(w vertical a,w//0) is maximum, where w//0 is the initial state of M. A tree search solution to this problem is described. The application of this method to certain types of analog signals is discussed.

This paper describes a cooperative interaction between human recognition and descriptive powers and a text understanding program for generating facial images. data structures for program control, data management and image modification are illustrated. The discussion includes implementation techniques used in developing the interactive program. Relation ambiguities encountered by the program are resolved by interrogating short term memory buffers and hash table data. Language and hardware features are combined by a data structure that interfaces display processor instructions and requests generated by the interpreted text. Updating this structure is discussed in terms of relationships between structure elements.

The major problem encountered in scene analysis is that the picture patterns to be examined are always subject to changes in translation, scale, contrast or more generally to so-called ″rubber sheet″ distortions. Then any scene analysis system using the models that represent and match a picture pattern in the actual image in terms of a fixed template will be infeasible in actual applications. A reasonable solution to the failure of the fixed template model is suggested. A model in the form of a flexible template, in which information concerning the variations that actual visual objects are allowed to have are included in the representation, is used to represent and match the picture patterns. To do this, the template is parameterized in such a way that it will not be sensitive, or even variant, to any of the rubber-sheet distortions. Then by assigning a cost function which corresponds to the way that the set of parameters might be adjusted, a decision scheme is used to evaluate the cost and render the set of optimum parameters that constitute the visual object.

This paper describes a random-access semiconductor memory designed to drive a shaded-picture television display. The memory provides eight bits per picture element to store a shaded grey-scale picture. The memory has four ports, one for the host computer, one for the TV display, and two which can service an external picture-processing device. A color map, 256 words of 36 bits each, provides for conversion of the eight bit codes into red, green, and blue components of 12 bits each. A flexible addressing and synchronizing system is included to provide for variable picture format and to simplify memory management. Analog deflection signals for precision CRT recording are generated in addition to the RTMA standard TV synchronizing signals. This paper discusses the central design considerations of this type of display system.

The notion of ″class″ to allow the hierarchical decomposition of the programming process into phases in which abstract data Types are defined and used, and phases in which possibly alternative implementations of these types are indicated. The view is taken that a ″class″ is characterized by its operators and an assertion expressing the axiomatic properties of its instances. An ″implementation″ of class is then a model of the assertion of the class (its invariant). As invariants do not express all relevant properties of classes, in particular they are silent about issues of efficiency, tools are suggested to aid the programmer in the indication of intended implementations.
