A unifying framework for analyzing models of neural map formation is presented based on growth rules derived from objective functions and normalization rules derived from constraint functions. Coordinate transformations play an important role in deriving various rules from the same function. Ten different models from the literature are classified within the objective function framework presented here. Though models may look different, they may actually be equivalent in terms of their stable solutions. The techniques used in this analysis may also be useful in investigating other types of neural dynamics. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1997.

The aim of the paper is to introduce a unified framework for soft computing based on the computational semiotics approach. Derived from semiotics, a classic discipline in human sciences, computational semiotics provides a mathematical foundation for the concept of knowledge and for knowledge processing that is suitable for intelligent systems design and implementation. As a result, a new perspective to study and develop intelligent systems emerges. The theory introduces the mathematical definition of objects, object systems and object networks. They are used to model the different types of knowledge used in building intelligent systems. We particularly focus on the use of a computational semiotics framework to construct fuzzy systems, neural networks and evolutive systems. The paper also addresses soft computing system in a unified manner.

A literature search over the last few years has shown that there has been a steady increase in publications on computer-based medical diagnostic applications, ranging from diagnostic aids for the physician or hospital staff, to systems issuing a complete diagnosis to experts or even to patients. Computer-based methods have been applied in so many medical specializations to assist the human expert, enhance one's senses and skills, or automate procedures, that an enumeration seems no longer adequate. This paper concentrates first on clarifying the terminology of computational intelligence (CI), presents the chronological development of CI systems using the example of Cyprus and investigates the overall significance of CI systems by visualizing the results of an extensive literature search in a medical database.

Over recent years, the focus of artificial intelligence (AI) research has shifted from top-down simulation of high-level cognitive functions based on (essentially-ungrounded) symbolic computations to consideration of the way that intelligent behaviour can emerge in bottom-up fashion in systems situated in the 'real' world. Inspirations from neurobiology and concepts of neural information processing have been very influential in this 'new' AI: most usually in the guise of 'parallel distributed processing' approaches operating at a high level of abstraction, or the more detailed and biologically-realistic 'computational neuroscience' paradigm. In this paper, we describe a biologically-motivated approach to learning in situated robots based on the computational neuroscience paradigm. The mechanisms by which such learning occurs are habituation, sensitization and classical conditioning of the neural responses involved in basic, pre-existing ('hand-wired') reflexes. Emergent light-seeking and collision-avoidance behaviors are observed in an adaptive mobile robot embodying these learning principles, as a result of interaction with its environment.

Concerns about the foundations of fuzzy logic could effectively be responded to positively in that is there is logic in fuzzy logic in the narrow sense as indicated by Zadeh. In order to explain the fundamentals of fuzzy logic, we present a systematic development of classical as well as fuzzy logics. This is done first separating the notions of membership assignment of elements to sets and truth assignment to propositions. Next we discuss the formation of truth tables for both the classical and fuzzy logic theories. Then we consider the derivation of canonical forms for the basic combination of concepts. Under various axiomatic assumptions, it can be shown that there are various categories of fuzzy logics as well as classical logic within the same framework.

This paper explains how to minimize a makespan of the job shop scheduling problem using evolutionary programs. So the job shop scheduling problem is among the hardest combinatorial problems. Not only is it NP complete but it is one of the worst NP complete class members, but for better performance it is very important to develop an efficient representational scheme and effective genetic operators. Our objective is to improve performance of the evolutionary programs based approach to job-shop scheduling problems by creating a new representation of the chromosome where we integrate the precedence constraint, and the new genetic operators associated with this original representation.

There are many large system problems that are hard to model exactly or in a computationally tractable fashion. Examples include the mapping of human DNA, speech recognition, and automated learning in computer chess. Traditional artificial intelligence solution techniques for such problems rely on a combination of custom encoding of expert knowledge and heuristic search. They take much time to hand craft and then often are unable to take advantage of faster computers as they become available. In this context, the authors explore the advantage of using statistical search techniques in which the knowledge is encoded in some form of statistical model whose parameters are automatically adjusted or trained with domain data. The benefits are faster development times, greater solution accuracy (compared to hand crafted solutions) and the ability to allow the problem size and desired solution accuracy to be scaled up with computational resources. They apply this approach to certain critical computational problems in mapping the human genome. They use a Bayesian model to provide the best solution accuracy as a function of the number of parameters. Heuristic search techniques derived from artificial intelligence are used to search the model space in an efficient manner in the average case.

The author contends that there are no representations in brains, only meanings. A meaning is the focus of an activity pattern that occupies the entire available brain. It is constructed through intentional action and learning from the consequences of the action. Communication between brains requires the construction of representations that express meanings and elicit meanings in other brains. These representations have no meanings in themselves. One aim of artificial intelligence is to build "meaning machines", that can initiate actions in the context of broadly assigned goals and learn about their environments from the received results of their own actions. A prototypical device is described that is based in experimental nonlinear brain dynamics and implemented with differential equations. Studies of the neurodynamics of sensory cortices during conditioned responses of trained animals to learned stimuli have supported the development of a mathematical model of the nonlinear dynamic processes by which meaning is constructed. A second order linear ordinary differential equation with compression of output by an asymmetric static sigmoid function describes each node as a neural population. The nodes are coupled by weighted connections, and the set of equations is solved by numerical integration. The parameters are optimized to give aperiodic attractors simulating observed brain activity. The attractors are stabilized with biologically modeled additive noise.

Describes the design of a language for automatically generating programs to reformat HL7 messages. The clinical information system (CIS) at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center (CPMC) uses HL7 as a standard for data interchange. Collecting data from several different ancillaries necessitates reformatting the information to provide a uniform data representation for the CIS. We developed a system that automatically generates HL7 reformatters given a specification of operations that need to be performed on the third-party messages. This automatic generation significantly reduces the development time; we expect it to have a major impact on the maintenance of these programs as well.
