Many communicative behaviors in the animal kingdom consist of performing and recognizing specialized patterns of oscillatory motion. Here we present an approach to the representation and recognition of these oscillatory motions based on the categorical organization of a simple sinusoidal model having very specific and limited parameter values. This characterization is used to specify the types and layout of computation for recognizing the patterns. Results of the method are demonstrated with real oscillatory motions showing the viability of a structured categorical framework.

We have developed a system for detecting and tracking human face and eye in an unstructured environment. We adopt a biologically plausible retinally connected neural network architecture and integrate it with an active vision st stem. While the active vision system tracks the object moving in real-time and the neural network detects the face and eye location from rite video stream at a slower rate. This paper provides a systematic tc ay of creating and selecting examples for training the network by exploring the link between theory and practice. Experimental results on real sequence of images from a space-varying sensor depicts the performance of the system.

A new method for real-lime tracking of non-rigid objects seen from a moving camera is proposed. The central computational module is based on the mean shift iterations and Ends the most probable target position in the current frame. The dissimilarity between the target model (its color distribution) and the target candidates is expressed by a metric derived from the Bhattacharyya coefficient. The theoretical analysis of the approach shows that it relates to the Bayesian framework while providing a practical, fast and efficient solution. The capability of the tracker to handle in real-time partial occlusions, significant clutter, and target scale variations, is demonstrated for several image sequences.
