Expressing basic needs may seem like a simple task, but not for those with deteriorated or lost ability to speak and move. This paper presents the design, application, and testing of an alternative communication system based on Brain computer Interface (BCI). The prototype includes six LEDs flickering at different frequencies, and each LED corresponds to one command. Depending on the direction of the gaze of the subject, the neuronal activity pattern in their occipital lobe will be consistent with the targeted LED flickering rate. By recording the electroencephalogram (EEG), and determining the neuronal firing frequency, the system uses Steady State Visual Evoked Potentials (SSVEPs) to convey one of six commands to caregivers. The SSVEP-based system uses an OpenBCI Ganglion 4-channel biosensing board to acquire brain signals and Arduino Uno for system control. Based on preliminary testing on eleven subjects, the overall accuracy of the system was 89%. Accuracy is the percentage at which the system correctly recognized and sent the selected command.

This study aims to design a robotic system for continuous passive motion therapy to support lower limb rehabilitation in post-stroke patients. The design process adheres to VDI 2206 and VDI 2225 standards. Key stages include defining requirements based on anthropometric and biomechanical data, function structuring, and using a morphological matrix to explore solutions. Weighted matrices evaluated ergonomics, control precision, and safety, leading to an optimal design for knee and ankle rehabilitation. The system provides controlled, passive movement, supports up to 80 kg, and allows adjustable speed and load resistance, ensuring smooth actuation and biomechanical alignment for effective motor recovery. A Von Mises analysis of the rail-structure connector, using 304 stainless steel under a 784 N vertical load (simulating patient weight), revealed a maximum stress of 29.58 MPa and deformation of 1.12×10-4, remaining within the material's elastic limit. © 2025 ieee.

In this work, we present the design and evaluation of an immersive Cyber-Physical control Room interface for remote mobile robots that provides users with both robot-egocentric and robot-exocentric 3D perspectives. We evaluate the Cyber-Physical control room against a traditional robot interface in a mock disaster response scenario that features a mixed human-robot feld team. In our evaluation, we found that the Cyber-Physical control Room improved robot operator efectiveness by 28% while navigating a complex warehouse environment and performing a visual search. The Cyber-Physical control Room also enhanced various aspects of human-robot teaming, including social engagement, the ability of a remote robot teleoperator to track their human partner in the feld, and opinions of human teammate leadership qualities.

The grid-integrated photovoltaic (PV) and wind power into the new power system is one of the key research topics today. Grid-integrated inverters, as devices that convert and inject electrical energy into the grid, offer advantages such as high efficiency and reliability. However, challenges remain in overcoming issues like input discontinuity and output instability in grid-integrated inverters. Therefore, this paper proposes a grid-integrated inverter based on PWM control, namely the Symmetrical Cascaded Half-Bridge Inverter (SCHB). Firstly, the function and characteristics of the SCHB inverter are elucidated. Next, the working principle of the SCHB inverter is elucidated. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed SCHB inverter is validated through simulation analysis. © 2023 ieee.

The application of the Siemens PMC system in industrial automation is explored, with a focus on the design and enhancement of a motion control model utilizing the sliding mode control algorithm. The Siemens PMC system, a crucial automation solution, comprises multiple layers, including hardware modules, software control systems, and communication networks. The hardware components primarily handle data acquisition and the execution of control commands, while the software control system processes and analyzes the acquired data through sophisticated algorithms to achieve precise motion control. A motion control model based on the sliding mode control algorithm is subsequently developed, and its efficacy and performance improvements are validated through simulation. Experimental findings demonstrate that, compared to conventional control methods, the sliding mode control algorithm offers notable advantages in terms of system stability and precision. Specifically, motion control errors are reduced by approximately 11.8%, the system's response time is decreased by 13.7%, and the system's resistance to external disturbances is significantly enhanced, leading to improved overall stability. Detailed data analysis reveals that the sliding mode control algorithm not only enhances the dynamic performance of the system but also contributes to reductions in energy consumption and operational costs. © 2024 ieee.

This work investigates the effectiveness of two training systems based on consumer hardware technologies, a first one using computer-Based Learning (CBL) and the other exploiting Virtual Reality (VR). A user study was executed in order to compare the two training and analyze the most suitable approach for the learning of preparatory material in the context of an industrial assembly and maintenance (IMA) procedure. The results highlighted that, although trainees using VR experienced higher levels of cognitive processing and attention, the knowledge gain of CBL was comparable to that of VR for the preliminary phase training. Nonetheless, VR was still able to provide better learning gains in terms of procedural skills compared to CBL. © 2024 ieee.

The SODA Synthesizer is an open-source, modular, end-to-end hardware compiler framework. The SODA frontend, developed in MLIR, performs system-level design, code partitioning, and high-level optimizations to prepare the specifications for the hardware synthesis. The backend is based on a state-of-the-art high-level synthesis tool and generates the final hardware design. The backend can interface with logic synthesis tools for field programmable gate arrays or with commercial and open-source logic synthesis tools for application-specific integrated circuits. We discuss the opportunities and challenges in integrating with commercial and open-source tools both at the frontend and backend, and highlight the role that an end-to-end compiler framework like SODA can play in an open-source hardware design ecosystem.

Position-controlled systems that perform repetitive tasks are crucial in industrial machinery. The electric actuators used in these systems are responsible for a large share of worldwide energy use, underscoring the opportunity for substantial energy savings in this area. In this context, mechanism design optimization is gaining popularity as it enables the minimization of the system's energy requirements while maintaining the same level of performance. However, current state-of-the-art methods often require complex analytic models of the system, which are highly machine-specific and prone to errors. Additionally, to efficiently search for the optimal design, these methods often neglect constraints or rely on analytic models to quantify the design space, further limiting the widespread adoption of these techniques. To overcome these issues, this paper proposes a novel method that relies solely on the often already available computer-aided design (CAD) models of the systems to optimize the design. In addition, we employ Bayesian optimization (BO) to efficiently explore the design space, which simultaneously allows for training a constraint classifier to predict feasibility. This approach facilitates the industrial application of the proposed method and enables a faster and more efficient optimization process. By applying the method to a ventilator case study, it was found that the root mean square torque of the machine could be reduced by 71% compared to the currently used design, within 344 iterations.

This paper investigates the performance of simultaneously transmitting and reflecting surface (STARS) assisted semi-grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access network with randomly distributed users. By deploying STARS, the transmit signals of grant-based user (GBU) and grant-free users (GFUs) can be exquisitely adjusted to reduce interference. We propose a maximum channel scheduling (MCS) protocol that allows a GFU to access GBU’s channel with the assistance of STARS. In particular, the impacts of perfect/imperfect successive interference cancellation (pSIC/ipSIC) on MCS protocol are taken into account. To characterize the performance of STARS aided MCS (STARS-MCS) network, we derive the expressions of outage probability for GBU and GFU with pSIC/ipSIC. By applying convolution theorem and Laplace transform, the asymptotic expressions of outage probability and diversity orders for GBU and GFU are attained. We further design a STARS-based power control (SPC) strategy to eliminate the outage probability error floor and improve the outage performance. Numerical results show that: 1) The performance of STARS-MCS outperforms the existing benchmarks in terms of outage probability and system throughput;2) The SPC strategy can effectively improve the performance of the STARS-MCS network and eliminate the outage probability error floor at high signal-to-noise ratios;and 3) By adjusting reflection and transmission coefficients of STARS, the outage performance of GBU and GFU can be greatly enhanced. © 2025 ieee. In this paper, the problem of sum-rate maximization for an active reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted downlink rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) transmission system is studied. In the considered model, the active RIS is deployed to overcome severe power attenuation, which is caused by the cumulative product of RIS incidence path loss and the reflection path loss. Since the active RIS can adjust both the phase and the amplitude of the incident signal simultaneously, the RIS control scheme requires delicate design to improve RSMA communication performance. To address this issue, a sum-rate maximization problem is formulated to jointly optimize the beamforming vectors, rate allocation vector, and RIS precoding matrix. To solve this non-convex sum-rate maximization problem, an iterative algorithm based on fractional programming (FP) and quadratic constraint quadratic programming (QCQP) is proposed. In particular, the proposed algorithm firstly decomposes the original problem into two subproblems, namely, 1) beamforming and rate allocation optimization and 2) active RIS precoding optimization. The corresponding variables of the two subproblems are optimized through sequential convex approximation (SCA) and block coordinate descent (BCD), respectively. Numerical results show that the proposed active RIS-aided RSMA system could increase the sum-rate by up to 45% over the conventional passive RIS-aided RSMA system with the same energy consumption. © 2023 ieee.
